#Enlightening (2008-11-23) After hearing about this book from someone, I really felt to get it. It did not disappoint. This woman had an incredible journey that changed her life forever. I could identify with so many different aspects of her process, I really enjoyed it. I was amazed how much I could identify with her about, even though recently I had just had a fractured arm, nothing like her experience, but, many things changed anyway. I would recommend this book to everyone.
#Review of My stroke of Insight by Jill Bolte Taylor, PhD (2008-11-23) I enjoyed this book tremendously. I saw the author, Jill Bole Taylor, interviewed on Oprah prior to ordering the book, and was intrigued by her story. There were a lot of technical references and maybe a little too indepth description of how the neurons connct with each other, etc. . . . . . , however the life changing information I took from this book, (understanding the effects of positive/negative energy on the patient, knowing I can personally control my thought processes without going through a brain trauma...
#My Stroke of Insight - adds insight into stroke patients minds. (2008-11-22) Reading My Stroke of Insight gave me incredible insight into what it must be like to be in the mind of a stroke patient. I wish I would have known about this book while my dad was still alive. He suffered through several strokes and died in July. It gave one a new perspective on what a stroke patient is going through, which would help a love one and caregiver provide empathy for the patient. The end of the book makes you realize that we humans spend way too much time on things that do not matter and w...
#My Stoke of Insight (2008-11-20) It is a very good book related to the stoke caregivers. It has a lot of information related to recovery and get help.
#Sometimes repetative, but worthwhile.... (2008-11-19) My husband is at risk for a stroke sometime within his life time (already had a very minor one), and so I read this book seeking the detailed information promised by a scientist. The best information was to be patient, look the patient in the eyes, speak quietly and slowly over and over if necessary, stay positive and detail oriented, and develop daily plans. Good information, but sometimes too much repeat information. I also wished that the author had used less contrast description when talking about her first day and week af...

An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they’ve transformed—people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and hu...

#Remarkable insight on the human brain from the frontiers of science (2008-11-19) This has to be one of the most fascinated works I ve come across in a while. The main premise of the book is the extraordinary plasticity of the human brain. The author makes a compelling argument, supported by endless and very valuable examples, studies and facts to support this theory. Some of the most exciting topics explore how the brain develops and learns, effects of certain disorders (i. e. obsessive-compulsive disorder), addictions and strokes on its function and current treatments that reverse...
#Giving it a Try (2008-11-11) I am still reading this book but am well into the 2nd half. Very good reading, amazing discoveries. I am trying out some of what I have read to see if I can get my leg working again. Time will tell, also patience and endurance.
#One of the Revolutionary New Books on Brain Change (2008-11-10) Predating Sharon Begley s groundbreaking book Train Your Mind, Change Your Brain: How a New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential to Transform Ourselves by a few months, Doidge approaches the new brain science from the perspective of topical studies and personal stories. A practicing psychiatrist, he looks at how we can apply the new science to self-image, bad habits and obsessions, acquiring tastes, and even sexual attraction. What s unique and helpful is his discussion of the dark side of brain change. The bo...
#Human brain life (2008-10-30) Having had a serious brain injury 17 months ago, and, very fortunately completely recovered, I am more fascinated than ever with the human brain. This book is so informative. It is amazing what the brain does, and so relatively little is still known about it. This guy has come up with a fantastic review of the brain. All power to him. It is so encouraging for someone, like me, who has had a brain trauma. LOU
#The Brain That Changes Itself. (2008-10-28) Our daughter had a serious brain injury in 2003. The content of this book provided us with very contemporary, moreover, encouraging information.

Jared Diamond

Why did Eurasians conquer, displace, or decimate Native Americans, Australians and Africans, instead of the reverse? In this groundbreaking book, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for shaping the modern world. Societies that had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed writing, technology and government, and organized religion - as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war. The scope and explanatory power of this book are astounding. (The New Yorker)

#A profound and lasting classic (2008-11-02) This is a truly profound book, and quite elegantly written. The central insight is how geography has been a main driving factor in the development of civilizations. Diamond comes at this thesis from several different angles, most importantly after looking at how development has differed between different regions. Diamond builds a very compelling argument, and is helped by his intimate knowledge of many places - knowledge which comes from actually having spent quite a deal of traveling. He is also helped by his diverse background - as a sci...
#Fascinating overview of environmental factors, but too biased (2008-11-01) This is a fascinating study of how societies developed, however, it s frustrating that Diamond takes such an ideological position at the outset, ruling out some factors simply because he doesn t like them. Inexcusably for an evolutionary biologist, Diamond fails to inform his readers that it is different environments that cause, via natural selection, biological differences among populations. All of the Eurasian developments he described created positive feedback loops selecting for increased intelligence an...
#History, It s What s for Dinner (2008-10-21) Dr. Diamond s magnum opus for which he has won an Oscar. Or maybe it was the Pullet Surprise. Something like that. Unrivaled, in the experience of this humble reviewer, in either clarity or insight, GGS, is one of the best books I have ever read. Diamond is a gifted writer and is able to present complex issues simply and clearly. He also presents several interesting hypotheses regarding the evolution of civilization about how the humans had uncomfortably little to do with anything. We are the products of the plants and animals we domes...
#Fascinating! (2008-10-12) It took me a while to open this book, as I was absolutely convinced that, with a title like Guns, Germs and Steel, the subject could only be war. Eventually, however, I opened the book, and was absolutely fascinated by it. The premise of the book is Yali s question. Yali, a native of New Guinea, has never been out of his country, is Why is it that you white people developed so much cargo and brought it to New Guinea, but we black people had little cargo of our own?The answer to this question takes about 430 pages of very interesting reading, going back t...
#Great subject and treatment - shakey science (2008-10-02) I know everyone says this - just adding my voice. The author needs to define his terms - what does he mean by smart when talking about the New Guineans. What does he mean by calling Australia backwards ? I wish he developed these vague/biased terms.
