The year was 1957, the month September, and I had just turned eight years old. Dwight Eisenhower was President, but in my life it was the diminutive, intense Sister Mary Lurana who ruled, at least in the third-grade class where I was held captive. For reasons you will soon understand, my parents had remanded me to the penal institution of St. Brigid’s School in Westbury, New York, a cruel and unusual punishment if there ever was one. Already, I had barely survived my first two years at St. Brigid’s because I was, well, a little nitwit. Not satisfied with memorizing the Baltimore Catechism’s fine prose, which featured passages like “God made me to show his goodness and to make me happy with him in heaven,” I was constantly annoying my classmates and, of course, the no-nonsense Sister Lurana. With sixty overactive students in her class, she was understandably short on patience. For survival, she had also become quick on the draw. Then it happened. One day I blurted out some dumb...

#Bold, Fresh and Real O Reilly (2008-11-22) In order to follow the recent presidential election I became serious about watching and listening to Bill on T. V. and radio. He often refers to his parents and the Catholic experiences that shaped who he is today. Bold-Fresh gives futher humorous insight into a fair and balanced, upright, moral, and sometimes obnoxious gentleman. He has great respect for his parents and the nuns who helped him define right from wrong. This book is an enjoyable quick read with lots of laugh-out-loud parts. The emotional softer side of Bill is also rev...
#Still haven t received it! (2008-11-22) I have not received my copy of Bold Fresh. I wrote to the vendor and got no response. I entered a complaint to AMAZON and got no response. My order was placed on October 18. Help!
#This Time It s Personal (2008-11-21) As the book jacket of A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity says, this time it s personal. Bill O Reilly, the man so many folks love to hate (please don t get Barney Frank started), this time around explains how he came to be the man he is. While it is doubtful that his detractors will read the book, those who admire O Reilly, or at the least find him to be entertaining, will probably enjoy this one. Bill O Reilly, born in 1949, seems to have always been a bit of a rebel despite his upbringing by Depression era parents. Many of his core beliefs, suc...

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and above all, how to embrace life fearlessly. Rose Mary, who painted and wrote and couldn t stand the responsibility of providing for her family, called herself an excitement addict. Cooking a meal that would be consumed in fifteen minutes had no appeal when she could make a painting that might last forever.Later, when the money ran out, or the romance of the wandering life faded, the Walls retreated to the dismal West Virginia mining town -- and the family -- Rex Walls had done everything he could to escape. He drank. He stole the grocery money and disappeared for days. As the dysfunction of the fami...

#Deeply Disappointing (2008-11-21) After reading so many positive reviews for this book, I was deeply disappointed by the content and writing style. The four-word sentences and atrocious punctuation were torture for me. The author may have wanted the memoir to be from a child s perspective but the childish writing style was simply too much to bear. And this from a professional writer? Easily eighty percent of the commas could have been deleted from this book with only beneficial results. Also I found the book to be completely incredible. Walls describes in detail lighting he...
#One of the best books I ve read in 2008 (2008-11-20) Walls writes with a keen eye and a warm heart, I could not put this book down. Easily on my top 10 list, I plan to give this book to those readers on my Christmas list. Highly recommended!!
#an amazing story of courage and perserverance. (2008-11-18) This tear jerking tale was one that brought tears to my eyes. The fact that the tale is true is just as amazing as Janette Walls herself. Many people go through times in their lives where they need courage, and if they are lucky they find it. Janette Walls had a childhood and adult life that have both called for an abundance of courage. Infact it seams that was the one constant in her life, she is a person of amazing strength in both living her life and telling this humbeling story. I will keep this book forever and read it...
#Cant put it down!!!! (2008-11-18) Cant stop reading it and I am totally carried away by the value of Wall s family. The story is so touching and full of energy. Thumbs up!!!
#Best Book all year (2008-11-15) The Glass Castle is the best book by far I have read all year. I couldn t put it down one of those I can t believe she survived books! It is a wonderful story, tear-jerker, a must read and a great book club book, you will definitely come away with your own sense of thankfulness for your own well-being.

Young people starting out in television sometimes say to me: “I want to be you.” My stock reply is always: “Then you have to take the whole package.”And now, at last, the most important woman in the history of television journalism gives us that “whole package,” in her inspiring and riveting memoir. After more than forty years of interviewing heads of state, world leaders, movie stars, criminals, murderers, inspirational figures, and celebrities of all kinds, Barbara Walters has turned her gift for examination onto herself to reveal the forces that shaped her extraordinary life.Barbara Walters’s perception of the world was formed at a very early age. Her father, Lou Walters, was the owner and creative mind behind the legendary Latin Quarter nightclub, and it was his risk-taking lifestyle that gave Barbara her first taste of glamour. It also made her aware of the ups and downs, the insecurities, and even the tragedies that can occur when someone is willing to take great ri...

#Wonderful book (2008-11-22) This is my second copy purchased. GREAT, warm book. . . . like curling up with your fav quilt and having a cup of tea. I got the first to give as a gift and got so many raves from the recipient I decided to get a copy for myself. LOVED IT
#Barbara Walters Audition (2008-11-19) The book is an interesting journey in this womans life. Highly intertainingbut a bit long. Still a very good read.
#Too much detail, not enough interest. (2008-11-13) I admire Barbara Walters as an interviewer tremendously. I was interested in learning more about this woman who preceded my generation and broke the way for females in journalism. While the book is easy to read and is chockful of names, dates, and anecdotes, I found it too tedious to wade through and quit after 200 pages. I think if I were from the same age group, the book might be more appealing. But as it was, I had little interest in many of the people and incidents she described. Maybe I will try this again some day, but I ...
#Audition (2008-11-12) A fabulous read. . . Ms. Walters shares her extraordinary life with readers and leaves you spellbound. Very interesting.
#My thoughts on it (2008-11-01) I am very pleased with my book I ordered and received it in record time. Thanks

#My wife s favorite book (2008-11-02) Just great and so down to earth. What ALL kids need to learn about interacting with dads and moms and vice-versa. GOD is huge in the books.
#a fan (2008-10-08) still have not read book but was a tim russet fan. . . this book was a must have
#Big Russ and Me (2008-09-29) Big Russ and Me was in the condition described. The book came in a timely manner. Cheryl
#Heartwarming (2008-09-28) We enjoyed this book very much. Listening to Tim Russert s voice made it feel like you were sharing stories with an old friend. His appreciation of his humble beginnings and up bringing are very evident. You can see why so many people connected with how he delivered the important world happenings and made it relevent to all. A great story of how simple a fathers love can be. Do not turn it off until you hear the epiloge, very tender, especially now.
