Already on course to be one of the year s biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon s unlikely position as Britain s favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006 s terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the first where they nailed their own sound, a striking amalgam of bluesy vocals and post-punk primitivism. In comparison Only By the Night consolidates rather than advances their style. The appropriately incoherent Sex on Fire, already a chart topping single, is catchy but sounds lightweight next to songs like the fierce Crawl and the stadia-r...

#A good album for your first KOL purchase (2008-11-29) As a newcomer to KOL, having seen and liked KOL at several festival gigs on television this year (2008), I decided to buy a couple of their albums, this one, and Because of the Times. OBTN is definitely my favourite - a real grower. There s a sense of atmosphere, and production values recalling at times both U2 and Big Country, whilst very definitely remaining uniquely Kings of Leon. Whilst I like a number of the tracks on BOTT, I find some of the writing on it somewhat clunky and disjointed - great rock anthemy stuff for earlier...
#Kings Of Modern American Rock (2008-11-29) Like a lot of people I bought based on Sex On Fire and quite liked Use Somebody too. Thing is, when I listened to this in my car after buying, I realised right from the opening Closer that there is quite a lot more to it that those songs. I am a music lover and buy a lot of cds based on a whim but this is one of those albums that stands out and I know I will never grow tired of this. The lead singers voice is just outstanding and sounds just as good live from when Ive seen them on TV, they are also all fantastic musicians. Rarely do bass p...
#BIG LET DOWN (2008-11-29) Very much looking forward to hearing this album but was very disappointed by the whole thing. I found it really boring with little variation.

Aha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll s zenith. There s hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--My Party, Camaro, and the sarcastic Charmer--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band s approach heard, in several of the record s 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a woo woo chorus add a sinister aspect to Trunk, and Knocked Up features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning She don t care what her mama said/She s gonna have my baby. The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced McFearless, a reg...

#Brilliant album (2008-11-22) Such an amazing album I love every track. KOL are one of the best bands around at the moment. Can t wait to see them live. 10 out of 10
#Pretty damned good! (2008-10-15) I wasn t a Kings of Leon fan before I heard Only by the Night , but am now, so I tried this one. Not quite as good but still very enjoyable, and you can see the path they were taking toward their latest work with this offereing. Recommended, there are a few really good songs here too!
#brilliant. full stop. (2008-08-11) I m 46. My eldest daughter is almost 22. (not that THAT matters, but I m perhaps a little older than the average Kings of Leon fan?) Because of the Times is one of those rare cd s you can put on, and listen to, (all the way through) when you need a cd you can put on, and listen to, all the way through, without having to fast forward through the rubbish bits. Because there aren t any. (rubbish bits) Brilliant, as I said.
#Stunning (2008-08-09) This album is stunning from start to finish. It is even worth buying just for the single Fans which is one of the most beautifully constructed songs that I have ever heard.
#Get your daily fix of The Times (2008-02-17) Tennesse rockers Kings Of Leon return with their third and heaviest, perhaps most accomplished album to date, Because Of The Times , staking their claim as one of the finest rock groups on the planet. This is a rock album as immense, wild and important as Nirvana s In Utero and the second track, Charmer could quite easily have been written and performed by Kurt Cobain at his sardonic best. McFearless has been compared with (early) U2, but, in reality, it s much better than that. On Call is anthemic and features a vocal hook wh...

Typecast them as rootin , tootin cowboy rockers if you will, but Aha Shake Heartbreak shows the Kings Of Leon have more to offer than beardy rock classicism. Indeed, for all the talk of Neil Young or Creedence Clearwater Revival, the outfit this Nashville-based band of brothers (and one cousin) resembles most is New York new-wavers The Strokes: it s there in Nathan Followill s minimal, metronomic drum rhythms, there in Matthew Followill s spare guitar lines, and there in frontman Caleb Followill s insouciant, beer-chugging drawl. That said, brother Caleb s lyrical concerns are strictly of the old school: the likes of Taper Jean Girl and Milk deal with wine, women and song, although if you can decipher his ragged Southern twang - at times, eerily reminiscent of Frank Black s mangled Mexican on the Pixies Vamos - you perhaps deserve some sort of medal. The Kings strongest suit is probably their fast numbers - see The Bucket, a hymn to the touring lifestyle hauled along by the seat of ...

#A departure from the south (2008-12-02) This album has some great songs. Album opener Slow Night, So Long really grabs your attention and is the second best song on this LP. The best is Milk , a cracking tune. King Of The Rodeo and Day Old Blues also get special mention. What carried the Kings of Leon s first LP, Youth and Young Manhood through the weaker tracks was the southernness of the LP. It existed as a complete album of high quality. On Aha Shake Heartbreak they ve departed from the southern sound, so there is nothing tying the album together. So alas, though...
#yew-haw (2008-10-15) best of their 4 albums. their most consistent, it really sounds like they are on fire and inspired. raw rock at its best a-la 70 s ac/dc or credence clearwater revival but not mere copyists, they have their own very unique twist on things. better than the 1st album as this is more cohesive as the 1st was a mix of an earlier e. p and some new songs and as a result sounds a bit disjointed, i doubt they will ever be this good again as their next 2 albums are lacking in both fire a...
#Another triumph (2007-05-22) After the impact of their brilliant debut album, the Kings follow-up album was eagerly anticipated. And they delivered BIG time!Aha Shake Heartbreak (though an odd name for an album) simply solidifies the thoughts among many (myself included) that the KOL are the best rock band to have come out of America for a long, long time. It is chock-full of lively, driving numbers, awash with Caleb s Southern, twangy drawl, Nathan s snappy and precise drumming (check out Velvet Snow) and Matthew and Jared s solid bass-lines and catchy riffing. Top tracks include Sl...
#SOUTHERN SPECTACULAR (2006-10-03) How does one describe this album, southern american rock maybe, but oh how it rocks. Their first album was excellent, but they have actually gone one better. This is one band you must listen too, because to describe them it would all just come out wrong, so do yourself a favour and treat yourself to some magic and make your own mind up. SHEER CLASS
#In the top 5 albums of all time! (2006-09-15) This album is just sheer brilliance, it has changed my taste in music completely. If someone described this album to me before I d listened to it, I probably would have avoided it. Thank God I didn t!It is brilliant all the way through, I saw them live in June 05 in London, and they were absolutely brilliant. Not enough words in the English language to describe how awesome this album is. If it s not already in your CD collection, or on your iPod, I have already lost respect for you!Fantastic band, fantastic album - speechless!

Kings of Leon are four members of the Followill family, three brothers and a cousin. The title Youth & Young Manhood is an accurate summary of their places in life--the oldest member, drummer Nathan Followill, is 23, while the youngest, bass player Jared Followill, is just 16. The brothers had a childhood that was both eccentric and peripatetic, living out of a car while their preacher father toured the southern United States, and have most recently been living in Nashville, they don t appear, judging by this startlingly assured debut, to have been unduly traumatised by either experience. Kings of Leon, up to and including their haircuts and moustaches, are steeped in the rock & roll of the American south: Youth & Young Manhood is largely four-square boogie whose ideal setting would be a bar with sawdust on the floor and chicken wire protecting the stage. The Kings of Leon do not have a single formative influence drawn from within their own lifetimes--they clearly whiled away their fa...

#The best album in the last 10 years (2008-09-25) When Q magazine asked Noel gallager what band he was looking out for at T in the park years ago he said, kings of leon, They are my new favourite band. I imediately bought the album when it came out (alongside the darkness s permission to land. . . . cough) He wasn t wrong. Youth and young manhood was blindingly brilliant. Lyiricaly the songs are brilliantly smutty yet you really have to be looking for the sexual reference. Thats really what the album is about. Being young and desperate to have it off with ladies. But musicaly Moll...
#Brilliant (2008-04-27) I was quite slow on the uptake with KOL, I only bought this album a year ago but it remains possibly one of my favourite albums and is rarely far from my CD player. I ve never once got bored of it and can sit through the entire album without skipping a single track. Happy Alone, Molly s Chambers and California Waiting are possibly the best on the album. Can t wait to see them for the first time in Glastonbury! Utter brilliance.
#Excellent Stuff (2007-08-25) I love it. . . not in an instant, first hearing way, but in a play it a few times and watch the sensation of This is REALLY good creep up on you. . . . . I have been re-listening to this lately, and it is ageing well!Basic, clever, loud, furious and masterful. Highly recommended - one of my top 20 albums. Excellent.
#Great album (2007-08-06) I got this because I heard Red Morning Light on FIFA 04. It is a great album although sometimes I do get a bit bored with it. But it is worthy of 4 stars and I would recommend this to anyone who likes good music.
#Long live the Kings! (2007-05-22) I heard two tracks from this album as I was walking through an HMV store, and it was so good I had to buy it there and then. And boy am I glad I did - Youth and Young Manhood is about as fine a debut album as I have ever heard. It is a great mix of hard-rock meets Southern country, with a dash of boogie thrown in, to create a refreshing, unique sound. Right from the opening riffs of Red Morning Light I was blown away by the energy and enthusiasm of the Followill clan. Full of catchy riffs, sharp solos and great drumming (with plenty of cowbell from ...
