Already on course to be one of the year s biggest sellers, Only By the Night has sealed Kings of Leon s unlikely position as Britain s favourite American rock band. The Followill brothers (and cousin) have always been tagged as part of a southern rock tradition of family bands such as the Allmans and Lynyrd Skynyrd, a label they vehemently refuted. But the skinny lads certainly looked like a classic rock act, even as they took musical inspiration from indie contemporaries The Strokes and eighties new wave acts such as The Cure and New Order. Only By the Night is effectively a sequel to 2006 s terrific Because of the Times, their third record and the first where they nailed their own sound, a striking amalgam of bluesy vocals and post-punk primitivism. In comparison Only By the Night consolidates rather than advances their style. The appropriately incoherent Sex on Fire, already a chart topping single, is catchy but sounds lightweight next to songs like the fierce Crawl and the stadia-r...

#A good album for your first KOL purchase (2008-11-29) As a newcomer to KOL, having seen and liked KOL at several festival gigs on television this year (2008), I decided to buy a couple of their albums, this one, and Because of the Times. OBTN is definitely my favourite - a real grower. There s a sense of atmosphere, and production values recalling at times both U2 and Big Country, whilst very definitely remaining uniquely Kings of Leon. Whilst I like a number of the tracks on BOTT, I find some of the writing on it somewhat clunky and disjointed - great rock anthemy stuff for earlier...
#Kings Of Modern American Rock (2008-11-29) Like a lot of people I bought based on Sex On Fire and quite liked Use Somebody too. Thing is, when I listened to this in my car after buying, I realised right from the opening Closer that there is quite a lot more to it that those songs. I am a music lover and buy a lot of cds based on a whim but this is one of those albums that stands out and I know I will never grow tired of this. The lead singers voice is just outstanding and sounds just as good live from when Ive seen them on TV, they are also all fantastic musicians. Rarely do bass p...
#BIG LET DOWN (2008-11-29) Very much looking forward to hearing this album but was very disappointed by the whole thing. I found it really boring with little variation.

The album title, Out of Control, is of course a misnomer-- if there is a more in control, empowered, dominant and disciplined pop tour-de-force out there, then Girls Aloud must still be sassier and brassier and a whole lot noisier, because we re not noticing anyone else. And this is also possibly the most restrained, or at least sleek and refined, collection of songs from the Girls yet. There are a couple of deeply pulsating off-the-peg club floor-fillers in Turn to Stone and The Loving Kind that embody an out-of-body hedonism, poised retro pastiches like the gliding and punchy The Promise and sassy rhythmic Love Is the Key, then up-tempo 80s-flavoured ballad Rolling Back the Rivers in Time, direct steamy pop of Fix Me Up and brilliantly on the button infectiousness of Miss You Bow Wow. The fluency is palpable across such a range of subtle twists and turns, their confidence such a given they don t ever need to force the point. This is album number five and although it s impossible to f...

#poor in my opinion (2008-12-04) Compared to their last few albums this is really, really poor. Nothing really stands out, all very average. Spend your christmas money elsewhere
#Yeah, they have definitely gone Out Of Control (2008-12-02) This album is the best, it is rated 5 star. Firstly why is this album the best? I think those who rated this album 5 star have forgotten what What Will The Neighbour s Say and Sound Of The Underground sound like. If this album is 5 star, than Tangled Up and Chemistry are 50 star and the previous two, off the scale. It seems like anything that this group produces, certain fans will say Its really good. But face it, this album is a waste of money. This is because hardly any songs stand out, or the songs are painful to ...
#Where are the classics????? (2008-11-27) Now I am a huge Girls Aloud fan always have been and always will, I own all their songs and have been to see them on EVERY tour (Much to my partners dismay!) BUT I can honestly say that this is their WORST album. The only song worth a listen is the Promise. Where are the classic sounds of Wake Me Up Something Kinda OOh The Show and Biology??? None of the songs on this album stand out and I think that this is a really poor effort from the girls. I can honestly say I am glad I will be on Holiday when they are touring next year, because I wou...

#missing so much good stuff (2008-12-02) other people have mentioned strangely missing greatest hits tracks. but what about Since I told you it s over - heart-wrenching uber-pop somehow ended on the cutting room floor. Odd to say the least.
#the best of the best (2008-11-26) this is a ex best of cd from start to finish it rocks this band are brillant buy this cd you will not be disappointed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
#Enter the Fireless, Gummy, Whiny Dragon (2008-11-20) Stereophonics are one of those cynical and unenlightened band s that leave you flabbergasted that they ve achieved ANY success at all. They have nothing about them. They re from Wales for one thing, and there not much you can point to in that woefully tiny country s honour s list during the last 50 years - in fact it s been a disaster. Lousy football team, dreary anthem, beautiful but dying language and in the face of all this, appalling rot dished up by futile nuggets like Tom Jones, the unbelievably talent-less Cerys Matthew...
#Almost... (2008-11-11) How can you miss out T-shirt Suntan, arguably the best pop song since Teenage Kicks? Still, not a bad collection from the Cwmaman boys.
#Not so sure (2008-11-10) I love the band, I love the albums. Not a massive fan of this release. It s got the songs which you will hear on the radio, but to the fans who love the albums as albums, its not a great investment. Starting with the most popular songs and going down pretty much. Not how I would have ordered it, if anything, start with the oldest and then show the audio progression in the sound. The new songs are good, however, as anyone who has the You re My Star single, they will tell you that the b-side is their preferred track! Forever should be on there, and it isn ...

17 years in the making and beholden of a level of hyperbole verging on mythology--one that couldn t even be derailed by Axl Rose staffing his ever-changing troupe with people named Buckethead, Bumblefoot and Brain--Chinese Democracy would disappoint even if it arrived in a puff of smoke and nullified the impact of The Dark Side of the Moon, Revolver and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (not to mention Appetite for Destruction). And it doesn t do that, obviously. In fact, straight off the block it s in danger of rear-ending the Guns N Roses legend, with the title track offering little beyond big production and Shackler s Revenge and Better emulating Linkin Park s industrial block building with a guttural vocal that threatens to turn the whole thing into a parody. But a desire to progress the G N R template finds its feet as If The World unfolds into an improbable eastern drum n bass orchestral trip-hop odyssey with some coarse riffing and the attitude of old is run through Pro-Tools and made ...

#Fantastic debut album from The Axl Rose Band (2008-12-04) Ok, I approached this album tentatively. Appetite is probably my favourite album of all time but this is not the Guns of old, and should not be looked as such. This is Axl s own project, and he has showed that he can do it on his own. The sound is different but it s still rock, ok it s grand, complex, over the top rock but the feel is of the kind of music that made GnR famous and has not been heard, with the exceptions of a few bands, since the early 90 s. So why do I like this album, well: Axl sounds great, there s hard roc...
#The most interesting rock album of the year.. (2008-12-04) For starters the hype behind this album has not helped matters, but that can t be helped with a band as big as this. The minority of people seem to be comparing it to what they expect, but times have changed and so has Axl, clearly he had a lot of ideas which he felt did not fit the old tried and tested sound of the band. The majority of people seem to greet it, in my view, fairly and as people should - as an album in it s own right. It s not about what you expect, it s about what it is, and it is in my opinion an epic, spr...
# New Guns N Roses - Doesn t work. (2008-12-03) This review is short and sweet. Forget this Album--nothing like Guns N Roses should be. Spend your money on the new AC/DC Album-- Black Ice and listen to good old honest Metal.
#Truly awesome (2008-12-03) As a fan of GNR from back in the day, I was pretty skeptical about this epic. When the six or so tracks were leaked a couple of months back, I was still a little skeptical. They sounded okay, but were clearly unfinished. I got the album yesterday, and have just finished listening to it. Wow. It s quite literally the best album I ve bought in years (and I buy a lot of music). Superb stuff, truly superb. How many albums do you know that feature 5 (that s 5) stand out tracks: Better, Street of Dreams, Madagascar, This I Love and Prostitute. The last thre...
#don t listen to the critics (2008-12-03) There are a lot of critics in the press who have panned this G&R release. Don t listen to them, they would have whinged whatever arrived, and probably think Coldplay are great. Truth is, this is a great rock and roll album, from one of the last surviving great rock legends. Axl Rose does things his way, and this albumn has bags of his personality infused in it. So what if it took ages to make? Better than banging out a heap of homogenous junk in 6 months, which is usually the way these days. Axl has taken pride in his work, and fair play to ...

#The best classical CD of the year. (2008-12-04) A wonderfully uplifting performance given by these 3 Priests along with singers from the Bascilica in Rome. The Vivaldi Gloria along with the Spanish Carol Hacia Belen are stupendous. What more can I say, except I hope that we will hear more from these three men and the choir to back them. A very moving talented performance. Jane

#Excellent choice of music (2008-12-02) The choice of programme was excellent. The voices of the three Priests, although, I think, untrained, were brilliant. What ruined this for me was the constant background of the Vatican Choir (the heavenly chorus). To my mind they added nothing, in fact, in some songs, they out-sang the three priests and, again, to my mind, they ruined the songs. Listen to any other cross-over band, in particular, Il Divo, Amici Forever, etc, - no heavenly chorus in sight. The Priests can stand alone so why don t they? The Vatican Choir did not help th...
#Voices Of Angels (2008-11-28) Listening to this album has been a spritual experience for me. Ave Maria and Pie Jesu are my favourites, but you don t want to skip any of the songs on the album. All songs are beautifully recorded and absolutely captivating. I will listen to this album for a very long time.
