808s & Heartbreak sees Kanye West move somewhat controversially away from hip hop towards what he calls pop art--not the art movement championed by Andy Warhol, but his own artful pop music. This translates as Kanye dropping his rap shtick and picking up the Auto-Tune to help even out his singing voice, and trading his usual summery bounce for the brittle, wintry sound of the electronic Roland TR-808--the drum machine used in early hip hop and techno. Where previous Kanye albums have been about bling, 808s & Heartbreak is a paean to pain and misery. Prompted by the recent death of his mother, opening track Welcome to Heartbreak sets the album s key themes--lyrics about the emptiness of fame and wealth crooned over a desolate electronic backdrop. Things don t get much cheerier as Kanye continues to pour his heart out on songs like Coldest Winter, Street Lights and the slow jam Say You Will. High profile high guests like Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne and Herbie Hancock can t lift the gloom eith...

#Lost his way (2008-12-04) I dont usually write reviews on this but having seen other peoples opinions I feel I have to. This is awful it is one of the worst things ive ever heard in my life. DOnt get me wrong, I love Kanyes other albums especailly dropout so in some ways I feel this a personal slur on all those adoring fans. Vocoders are cool for about 5 minutes, not every song. Kanye cannot sing and his lyrics are terrible on this album. The beats also sound like crap uk dance music slowed down, get back to the soul. Sort it out Kanye this is garbage!!!!!!!
#Quality Music - Who Cares What Genre (2008-12-03) It s funny to read the negative reviews of 808s & Heartbreak based on the fact that Kanye has neglected his hop-hop/rap roots. For those short-sighted people, they are missing out on hearing what I believe to be one of the albums of the year. I ve never bought a Kanye album before, even though I have picked up the various singles released from all his albums. So I kinda liked him, but never really committed to him by taking the ultimate plunge. On hearing Love Lockdown, I was completely blown away. The contrast between the sparse,...
#Ok, but not Classic Kanye (2008-12-02) I bought this album expecting to hear some really classic Kanye beats, with samples etc. Even though I was aware that it wasn t necessarily a hip hop album, I can t help but feel a little dissapointed with this effort. Every track is Kanye West singing using a voice synthesiser, it gets a little repetitive after a while. After a few listens, the album did grow on me though. You have to go in open-minded and give it a chance, as there are some really deep tracks with very meaningful lyrics. So all in all, not terrible, but the voice synthesiser ...
#Why? (2008-12-02) I have been a big fan of kanye and constantly have his debut album College Dropout on repeat as i think it is a great album. Kanyes new album is a big let down. If you actually listen to the lyrics you will realise they are not structed or have real meaning. What keeps this album from being a complete shambles are the producers. I dont know what happened to the hungry kanye but he s gone and is selling non structed songs for people who dont know much about music so they will buy it anyway. come on man you were meant to be a hip hop icon
#shockingly bad! (2008-11-29) Ive been a big fan of kanyes for yrs. . even before the masses knew him when he was only known in hip hop circles. I have all his albums and love his productions for other acts but when i heard Love lockdown i nearly collapsed. . now ive nothing against kanye branching out but this whole album is a complete mess. . it will date really badly for one thing and the whole autotune thing is annoying by the albums end. Theres a couple of decent tracks but nothing that would rival a good percentage of material of his earlier work. . really bad this album. . ...

Portishead s Third has been a long time coming, the result of a lengthy creative topor following 1997 s dark, distinctly underrated album Portishead. Importantly, though, they ve shaken it. While the core trio of Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, and Adrian Utley remains, this is quite a different band to Portishead s 90s incarnation: gone is the slo-mo turntable scratching and smoky jazz feel, replaced by heavy, brooding rhythms, vintage-sounding electronics, and spindly guitar. Still present, though, is that sense of emotional fracture and deep gloom. Silence opens with a dense drum loop which suddenly falls away to reveal Gibbons voice, cold but magnificent: Wounded and afraid, inside my head/Falling through changes. Nylon Smile, meanwhile, is a fine example of Third s occasional folksy edge, an acoustic song reminiscent of Leonard Cohen that, around its midpoint, lifts off on a propulsive electronic rhythm, Gibbons holding one clear, hard note as synthesisers bubble beneath. At times, i...

#What a comeback (2008-11-21) Much of the time bands who have gone into hibernation return with albums which are mere shadows of their previous work. This album is the complete opposite and successfully captures the eerie tones which occupy many of their best songs. I simply cannot pick a favourite from an album which oozes style.
#what a load of crock (2008-11-11) what a load of miserable garbled junk. . . . portishead should be embarassed of themselves. . . i am only giving it one star because amazon wont let me give it zero stars. . . utter durge. .
#Moshing for hip hoppers (2008-10-24) When I first heard Portishead s second album it sounded too much like a rusty tinman falling down a flight of even rustier iron stairs into an industrial meat grinder. So the album remained unlistened to for maybe a year, until I decided to give it a second chance and eventually fell in love with it. Third is very much a further progression in the same direction as before, but I have learned from my mistakes, and know that anything unusual and unexpected takes time to get used to. Initially I hated Machine Gun, and couldn t see how it was meant t...
#Morose Encounters of the Third Kind (2008-10-13) This album is really on the pulse and that is the greatest compliment you can pay a band who haven t released any new material in over 10 years. We Carry On is the surging adrenaline and panicking heartbeat at the centre of this very scary ride. It s the sound of our collective urban nightmare! The Rip is an instant classic - just beautiful and yes, a bit sad. Machine Gun and Plastic wear obvious Aphex Twin and Burial influences but are still uniquely different to anything else out there. Comeback of the year.
#Amazing (2008-09-09) Look, if you ve given this album a poor review then stop, put on a good pair of headphones, and listen to this album properly without skipping tracks. Quite frankly this is the most moving thing I ve heard for a long time.

#LP @ MK CD/DVD (2008-11-25) Well, I was there at the gig in MK and it was amazing, so have been waiting AGES for this to come out, and it finally came today :)When the DVD started up, the audio was a bit distorted, but I changed the settings and it was fine until half way through, when it went off again, but then was ok!! Will give it another run to and check settings to see that it s not a problem with the disc! Be interesting to see if anyone else s does this?!!Well, to the content, wow. . . . brought all the memories flooding back. We were at the bottom of the grass bank at the bac...
#Get It! (2008-11-20) i agree such as shame there isnt any of the other bands on this CD. hopefully a future DVD?definatly recommend buying this as it will commemorate the day nicely and will be apart of all the linkin park and jay z fans record collection.
#The Gig itself (2008-11-05) Absolutely brilliant gig. All the acts on the bill were brilliant (except The Bravery) I drove 3 and a half hours from Manchester for this gig, and it was so unbelievably worth itIf you missed this gig live, then make sure you buy this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#Great Gig! (2008-11-03) I was there and it was really good shame it doesnt have anything on innerpartysystem, pendulum or enter shikari but if you missed it then i would say get it even if like myself your not a fan of the various tracks they have done with Jay-Z it is still very well worth having a look
#PROJEKT REVOULTION MK BOWL 2008 (2008-11-02) I was there and this show was amazing, thousands of cheering fans and an unforgettable show. I was hoping they would release a cd/dvd for the show and i am so glad its coming out! One of those shows you just had to see

#Bring Back The Old Carters (2008-10-20) The Carter 3 is a good album , but is Waynes weakest by far. If you havnt heard the old Carters then i suggest that you listen to them before claiming C3 is Waynes greatest album. Dont get me wrong C3 is still a top album ( 5 Stars ) but i think it is highly overated. Most Recognisable Tracks include Lil Waynes hit Lollipop Ft Static Major. A MillieAnd Got Money Ft T-PainArtist such as Juelz Santana, Fabolous, Bobby Valentino and Jay-Z also feature among others. I recomend this album to anyone but suggest that listeners also listen to Waynes ...
#Wayne has SURPRISED ME!! (2008-08-29) What can i say? I m not a fan of Lil Wayne probably because of his I m the greatest rapper alive which he clearly isn t, but this album has made me think that he may not be the best but he definitely can rap now! I don t like all his songs but a few of them do have a vibe of flow and hard hitting lyrics. I have liked his previous music from past years, this man definitely can be put into top 20 rappers of all time, he is the first pure artist since Mr. Slim Shady but don t be foolish because he doesn t come close to Tupac, Eminem, Nas and a few...
#This is the Carter (2008-08-27) Great Album. Everytime I get into my car I start at track 15, Fabolous kills that with his Wayans Brother Rhyme. I have been a Lil Wayne fan since the Hot Boys and he came into his own with THE CARTER album. This is the Carter is an all time classic single. I just wish Mannie Fresh did some production on this album, that would have made it perfect. Great Album, do not judge it by the Lollipop Single (Which I think is rubbish), it was made for the mainstream.
#What the hell is wrong with people? (2008-07-16) A powerful rich white man sits in his leather chair atop his huge music empire. Prising a Cuban cigar from his mouth, he smiles as he approaches the young black man that has just entered his office. The young black man awkwardly accepts the rich white man s offer of a handshake. The white man excitedly urges the young black man to sit down. His excitement increases upon the sight of the loose-fitting apparel and silver chain donned by the young black man. So how are you going to make us richer? the powerful white man asks, arous...
#diverse (2008-07-05) i ll be quick in what i have to say: this album is diverse. It has everything. some soulful tracks, some poppy-little-bit-commercial tracks and some pure street bass-heavy hip-hop. best track on the album for me: A Milli (this is the heaviest track i ve heard in a long time)Hip-Hop is not dead.

#Q-Tip has made a comeback differently! (2008-12-04) Although the album is short (47 mins) it is well worth the purchase! Q-Tip has come back with the ol skool flow of hip hop into the present era. Play the album right through to get wid da vibe. Believe (track 11) featuring D Angelo is definitely a favorite 4 me.
#simple as this..... (2008-11-19) Buy it!!!NOW!!its in instant classic and prob wont be cheap for long. KAMAAL IS ON FORM AS USUALL. JUST CLICK ADD 2 BASKET LOL
#The abstract is back (2008-11-14) Iv just got this cd today, didnt even know anything about it until it popped up while i was seving the net,im a huge hip hop junkie and so i really respect Q,iv been listening to him since i was 12 when i first bought my first Tribe album and iv been a fan ever since anyway this is a brillent album showing hip hop aint dead. its 90% produced by Q himself and two others are from the late J dilla,My favourite track is DANCE ON GLASS but the whole album is brill,a must for any hip hop head PEACE
#2008 was a bad year... until now! (2008-11-13) He s only gone and done it! This album is not just worth the wait, its worthy of all the praise that is getting lavished on it from reviewers all over the globe. This is a real masterclass that demonstrates to all the would-be rappers out there that even though the world and its dog are bored stiff of the gerne, with artists that don t just cater to the marketing exec s by knocking out music by numbers (you all know who I m talking about) great hip-hop albums can still be produced. What we have here is a mature yet fresh hip-hop/nu-soul f...
#Hip-Hop is NOT dead!!! (2008-11-09) Now I haven t written a review on here in a long time but I really felt like people need to know how good this album really is. Two shelved albums & almost a decade after the release of Amplified, Q-Tip is back with The Renaissance. Amplified was an unusual album. Pure Hip-Hop songs such as Let s Ride were mixed in with more commercial sounding tunes such as Breathe & Stop, which were clearly aimed at attracting a broader audience. The results were mixed. Whilst his first solo LP boasts some excellent individual tracks, the album itself feels fo...
