#excellent lens for the price (2009-06-12) This really is a great lens for the price. As an enthusiastic amatuer looking for something to compliment his 18-55mm this is the perfect add on. I find myself constantly shifting between the two lenses to get the right shot which is great because it means I can capture exactly what I want even if the subject is distant. Also with such a long range lens the IS function is a big help in getting rid of shake. Best of all though is the price - only £200. Sure there are better lenses offering similar range but nothing I could find for my 450D...
#Doesn t work on some Canon Digital cameras (2009-05-19) I bought this for my Canon 10d - Tried it and it doesn t fit. I thought the for selected digital cameras meant for Canon cameras. After trawling the internet I found this:The EF-S 55-250IS is designed for use only with small (APS-C) sensor Canon cameras introduced after the Digital Rebel. It will not physically mount on cameras with larger sensors (EOS 5D, EOS 1D(s) series) and it will not mount on early APS-C DSLRs such as the EOS D30, D60 and 10D. It cannot be used with any Canon or 3rd party TC, nor can it be used wit...
#Better than I thought (2009-05-11) Have had the lens for a couple of weeks now and it s been everywhere with me. The quality of the images is superb and the Image Stabiliser really makes up for the extra 50mm you might get on a similar lens. You really can get very nice close up shots without a tripod. When you manipulate images on screen the clarity means you can get in even closer. Anyone who has bought a decent SLR (Canon EOS or similar) and has just got the standard 18-55mm lens really must consider getting this as it makes better use of the camera.
#Excellent value with amazing pictures (2009-05-10) After 6 months with my canon 400d I bought this lens after seeing all the good reviews said about this product , and they were right ! I recently went on a ski holiday and the lens really helped me capture close up shots of skiiers while I was far away on the chair lifts. The Image Stabalisation was a life saver as when fully zoomed in you got horrible camera shake, however when turned on the image floated nicely in from of you, perfect for a good shot. The sharpness of the lens also is a good improvement on the standard kit lens , I...
#I am an amateur but ..... (2009-04-22) I just love using this lense. The pictures are fantastic. Sorry I m not a techie so can t tell you why they are so good - they just are.

#A very good lens, but not perfect. (2009-02-23) I bought this lens to use with My EOS 40D last year. For a lens with a maximum of 300mm focal length it is quite compact and is easy to use hand held, the image stablizer works quite well in all but poor light conditions. Auto focus although generally good can be a bit hit and miss at times, searching back and forth to find the focus for a few seconds, but it usually focuses well in the end, it does work a lot better in bright light conditions though. The picture quality is sharp and clear throught the zoom range and the fine detail is w...
#Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens (2008-10-07) I use this lens with an EOS450D and the results are really exceeding my expectations. I have used the lens in a wide variety of conditions and have yet to find reason to complain about anything of substance. It is simple to use in automatic mode, and there are two image stabilisation modes which enable you to take photographs using this lens without having to resort to a tripod. Canon have to be congratulated on producing a very fine lens with an excellent range, and Amazon need to be congratulated on their price (circa £350) fo...
#Great for fast moving action (2008-08-09) Used this with my Canon eos 450 and it is excellent !I bought it mainly for taking photos at the theme parks and my children s school plays and sports days. I managed to get some great shots of my children on the rides at Drayton Manor Park after my wife missed them all with her compact because her digital camera (a 2 year old Panasonic Lumix digital compact) simply couldn t keep up with the speed and focus. The USM and IS combination worked so quickly and so well - got some great photos of my kids on the fast moving rides - I captured the e...
#The image stabilization system alone is worth every penny (2008-02-05) I ll only review the IS aspect of this lens and make one other comment since I have only had it 24 hours and have yet to go out and about with it. Image Stabilization:Having solved the problem I comment on below, I hooked this brand new lens up to my 400D and started shooting objects at maximum focal length across the room using available light only. No flash. I took two frames of each, one with IS on, and the other with IS off. Shutter speed was 1/10 - 1/20 second in each case. Yes, 1/10 - 1/20 second and I w...
#Very very good alround lens (2007-06-18) I have been using this lens for some time now with my EOS 300D and have been really happy with the results, I have used it in all types of lighting conditions, indoors and out and as long as you take these into account this lens will perform really well. I have even taken macro shots, which have been fantastic!

#A good lens at a reasonable price (2009-03-06) I have been using this lens for a year or so with my Nikon D80 and for the money I think it is a very good value for money lens. Recommended but shop around as you may get it cheaper. ProsWell madeSturdyFor the money it produces sharp images with only minor lens aberrationsGood vibration reduction systemGood price when compared to faster (low f stop) lenses. ConsThe f stop range means that it has limitations in low light conditions. This is especially noticeable for wildlife and sport photography. Zoom and focusing rings could have a s...
#Look at the photos not the reviews (2009-01-04) Nikon AF-S VR 70-300 f/4. 5-5. 6G IF-EDI ve been an amateur photographer since 1958. My first serious camera was a Hasselblad 500C (How serious do you want to get?) which cost me £150. It had a f2,8 Planar 80mm standard lens and that lens set the standard for the others. My usual print size was whole plate (8. 5 x 6. 5inches) and the results were magnificent. Times have changed. I took a series of photos on the first day this lens arrived and, just to test its quality, I cropped so that a print on to an A4 was equivalent to an A2. ...
#Nikon 70-300 AF-S VR - Cracker of a lens (2008-08-17) I m very impressed with this lens. Before I bought it, I read reviews on various websites, some saying it was brilliant, some saying it wasn t very sharp, too big, too heavy etc. I took the plunge and bought one and haven t regretted it. I ve used this on d40 and d300 bodies and it works superbly on both. The autofocus is very fast, quiet and accurate. The VRII system is also very impressive allowing very slow shutter speeds - I ve had sharp, handheld images at 1/30 sec at 300mm which would be completely impossible without it. ...
#The VR does the trick! (2008-06-29) Having already owned a Tamron 70-300 I discovered that that range was my most popular shot. I love the sniping shots. This Nikon lens is amazing and the VR makes all the difference! Hold down the shutter button and you can feel it cut in and notice suddenly the image through the viewfinder is very still!I have no problems with the quality of the results. I have heard that its at its sharpest between 170 and 270mm though but I have yet to try that. Its a little heavy for me as I do a lot of walking and its rather longer that the Tamron so I had...
#Beware of the seller if you want cashback (2008-06-17) This review is more about Simply Electronics than the lens itself. I ordered this lens at the same time as a Nikon D80 and another lens (which was delivered by a different seller). Nikon are currently running a cashback offer of £50 if you buy a D80 and one lens, or £75 if you buy a D80 and two lenses. When this lens turned up it turned out to be sourced from the US, so is not included in the cashback offer. When I complained to Simply Electronics about this they just said that most of their items are sourced from the UK but...

#Great deal (2009-07-01) Got a perfect lens as per my requirenment that too for a great price. Worth deal. . Thanks Amazon.
#not compatible with nikon d40 (2009-04-13) autofocus does not work with nikon d40 (worth checking which cameras are compatible for auto focus)ok if you are happy to manual focus
#Did not auto focus (2009-03-28) Although the lens is advertised as a Nikon Af there was no information as to which Nikon cameras auto focus will not work, the popular D60 is one. I had to return it and purchase another lens.
#Nice Lens (2008-09-30) This lens is really nice, lightweight compared to the £300 one. However, just beware that there is no Auto focus with the Nikon D40. Every other version works, just not the D40.
#Cheap construction, but amazing value for money (2008-07-02) First the bad points: the construction of this lens is lightweight plastic, it feels cheap, it drops down to f5 or below fairly rapidly as you zoom in, and being a Nikon G series lens it has no aperture ring so you can t use it on a trusty old manual camera. But for £75 what do you expect? Then the good. Other reviewers say that it is not sharp, or is soft, but looking at the shots I have just taken on my 10 MegaPixel D200, at between 70mm and 200mm focal lengths, blown up to 100% magnification on the screen I have absol...

#delighted (2009-04-30) Ordered this lens last week from Simply Electronics. Arrived wihin three days. An amateur, but not a beginner. I have now taken in excess of 100 shots with this lens. Really superior to the kit lens with EOS 100D. Light in weight, but does not feel fragile. IS is very useful at 250mm. AF is quick and responsive to scene. The detail and colour balance produced by this lens is excellent. It certainly is not an expensive lens - but the performance far outweighs the cost. I am a very delighted amateur. Recommend the lens and Simply Electronics. Jack Bolling....
