The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing Dancing Queen is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother s diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she d laid aside are coming back to life. But let s face it, the plot is not the point--it s a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep, every production number hammers its exuberance into your e...

#Mamma Mia - Written By a Punk? (2008-12-04) Malcolm McClaren says that Catherine Johnson - wot wrote this show - was a punk. At first I thought no way , but look how she s polarised the public. It s either 5 stars or 1 star in the amazon reviews. Look how the poor 1 star reviewers are vilified by the majority 5 starers. Scorned and despised for being different - just like punk! Well, I watched this as far as the bit where some biddies are singing Chiquitita to Meryl, who has locked herself in the toilet (I think) then I couldn t take anymore so I went off to pogo round my be...

What s a panda to do when his dreams of kung-fu awesomeness awake to the cold reality of noodle-making? Clumsy, overweight Po (Jack Black) dreams of becoming a kung fu master like China s revered furious five, but instead seems destined to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the restaurant business. When great leader Oogway has a vision that the imprisoned kung fu warrior Tai Lung (Ian McShane) will soon escape, he declares it time to choose China s dragon warrior--one kung fu master deemed worthy of possessing the dragon s scroll and its secret to limitless power. Po and all the townspeople rush to the Jade Palace atop the highest mountain to witness the contest between Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Crane (David Cross) and Viper (Lucy Liu), but Po is locked outside the palace. After a miracle of sorts, Po lands inside the palace gates, where he is chosen as the dragon warrior and placed under the tutelage of the decidedly non...

#Terrific entertainment! (2008-11-30) This is a kids movie done in the best way - lots of laughs, a great message, plenty of enjoyable asides and loads of bits and pieces adults can enjoy as well. The voice acting is top notch and with a great cast. I laughed out loud in several places and the film never gave way to over the top cutseyness - it s great fun all the way through and very strongly recommended.
#One good film :D (2008-11-16) This is actually a really great film! My dad took me to see it in the cinema, cos he thought it looked good. Even though I think Jack Black is fully amazing, and Jackie Chan is awesome, I didn t think I would enjoy it, since I m not one for cartoons, even though I m not that old. I could hardly stop laughing though! It s a great film, for kids and adults, and even the odd teenager, like me! I highly recomend it, if, like me, you love comedies! :)
#The Panda of Destiny? (2008-11-12) Our story centers around Po the Panda (voiced by Jack Black). He is a Kung Fu legend. Evildoers fear him and the people adore him. The Fearsome Five long to fight with him. And everything. . . hold on, maybe that isn t the way it really is. In reality, Po works in his father s noodle restaurant waiting tables. He s way overweight and out of shape. But he dreams about Kung Fu and idolizes the Fearsome Five, Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross), Tigress (Angelina Jolie) Viper (Lucy Liu), and Mantis (Seth Rogen). That s why, when it is...

The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City s new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent...

#Hurry up releasing this! (2008-12-03) This is without doubt one of the most detailed and intriguing films of recent years, like many film franchises they get tired and boring! However with Batman Begins and the Dark Knight they have been reinvented and far out do any of the Tim Burton films though i really like those offerings also. Batman Forever and Batman and Robin are terrible. Christian Bale is an excellent Batman and is suitably supported by the rest of the cast including Heath Ledger whilst excellent is under used and the pacing of the film is off here and there but with so muc...
#Over rated, Over hyped and BOREING (2008-12-03) After all the hype about this movie. I went expecting to see the best move ever and what I got was a avarage movie at best. Ledger was not that good. Jack was a much better joker. Eckheart was much better in this. Towards the end i found my self being very bored. However the last scene between batman and two face was very good indeed, its a shame the rest of the movie was nt as good. I m sure all the tdk fanboys will not agree and vote this is not helpfull but you need to ignore them as anyone who thinks this is the best move ev...
#Easily the best film of 2008 (2008-11-29) I have never seen a Batman film in my life but I watched this one because a friend said it was good. Oh, I m soooo glad I went to see it. It was without doubt my favourite film of 2008. Heath Ledger gave an awesome performance as The Joker, it s a shame he died so young. This is the best film he has starred in (either that or The Patriot ). Give this a watch, you won t be disappointed!
#Massive disappointment. (2008-11-26) Now, Don t get me wrong here, I m a BIG Batman fan and fan of comic books in general. I enjoyed Batman Begins but prefer the two Burton Batman flicks (Keaton is easily the best Bruce Wayne/Batman of anyone to play the part). The Dark Knight, while being a technically well made film, it is for me just too far removed from the Batman I have been reading for decades to even be called a Batman film, the Joker especially. This is not the Joker of the comics, this Joker has very little in common with that character. This is just some crazy guy in mak...

Pixar genius reigns in this funny romantic comedy, which stars a robot who says absolutely nothing for a full 25 minutes yet somehow completely transfixes and endears himself to the audience within the first few minutes of the film. As the last robot left on earth, Wall-E (voiced by Ben Burtt) is one small robot--with a big, big heart--who holds the future of Earth and mankind squarely in the palm of his metal hand. He s outlasted all the Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class robots that were assigned some 700 years ago to clean up the environmental mess that man made of earth while man vacationed aboard the luxury spaceship Axiom. Wall-E has dutifully gone about his job compacting trash, the extreme solitude broken only by his pet cockroach, but he s developed some oddly human habits and ideas. When the Axiom sends its regularly scheduled robotic EVE probe (Elissa Knight) to earth, Wall-E is instantly smitten and proceeds to try to impress EVE with his collection of human memorabil...

#Wall A++++ (2008-12-03) This could well be one of the best movies ever made. It is hillarious, yet warm, and carries a vital message. Those who have given the film a bad rating for the fact it contains little dialogue in the beginning, no doubt do not have the mental capacity to understand the true beauty of this amazing film.
#So much better than Mamma Mia! (2008-12-02) Read Empire s gushing review and went to see it myself . They put into print pretty much what I thought . Bravado animation - so much without even a meaningful word . Indeed I prefer the movie before the people speak. Every last bit of emotion is wrung out of a computer drawn robot with few facial features. Magnificent animation and storyBut all I hear around my office - it s boring my kids got bored (no mention of whether They liked it because they think animation is just for kids) and then gushing praise about the poorly directed/produce...
#wall.e is amazing! (2008-12-02) Wall. e is a fantastic film. He is a loveable robot with an amazingly detailed world around him. Not only is the story amazing, the music is fantastic too. The special features are incredible (and have helped me in my assignment about related films!)I 100% recommend this film.
#40 minutes of pure poetry (2008-11-30) This is a brilliant film as a whole. But I ll remember the first 40 minutes the most. The first part, with almost no dialogue, is as close as I have ever come to pure perfected poetry on film. In the darkness of the cinema I watched pictures that were not sad, but I still felt like crying. For the beauty. It s like a dance of intertwined emotions - when it s sad, it s funny, when it s fearsome, it s graceful, when it s robotic, it s human. The lack of dialogue enhances the experience. A masterpiece.

Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that s, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy s villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy s colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull s whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary, its reveal is the weakest pa...

#poor film (2008-12-03) ok do not waste your money on this poor film, it is truly disappointing. Thats all i can be bothered to say about it, just steer clear.
#Ronseal (2008-12-01) Indy 4, 18 years or so in the making and was it worth it? Of course it was!! Indy is back. This film does exactly what it says on the box, it gives you an Indiana Jones movie with Russians instead of Germans. Now this aint perfect, no its not, but its still a mile better than most movies of this style. I have recently re-watched the film on DVD and found myself enthralled right upto the end- well, before the aliens phone home!! Indy 4 is a superb movie that has allowed for the time difference between films and obvious ageing of its cast by letting Indy be more w...
#If you have so far missed seeing this... (2008-11-30) . . . my advice is for you to continue to do so. This really is the most amazing piffle. I watched only out of nostalgia for the three previous, equally pifflish but somehow much more fun, incarnations. The plot? WHAT plot??? The acting? Totally hammish, none more so than Cate Blanchett s villain. It gets two stars rather than one, only for the marvellous visual effects and the equally marvellous reincarnation of the 1950s, clothing styles, cars, etc.
#A lot of fun to be had! (2008-11-29) I watched it twice at the cinema and just saw it a third time on DVD. The first time was a bit disappointing, the second time it was good with expectation more realistic and a third time it was very good. The first three were great and the fourth is a bit different but it s not nearly as a bad as some people say. The gophers, the silly tarzan bit and Karen Allen s hammy acting are all very forgiveable. The old ones had their silly and hammy bits too. The only bit I properly dislike is the full on sci-fi, Close Encounters ending. They should h...
