Winning the Man Booker prize is something that most authors dream of, although -- ironically -- the reputation of the prize itself was under siege a few years ago. Books that won the award were acquiring a reputation of being difficult and inaccessible, but those days appear to be over -- and unarguable proof may be found in the 2008 winner, The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. Apart from its considerable literary merit, the novel is the most compelling of pageturners (in the old-fashioned sense of that phrase) and offers a picture of modern India that is as evocative as it is unflattering. The protagonist, too, is drawn in the most masterly of fashion.Balram Halwai, the eponymous `white tiger , is a diminutive, overweight ex-teashop worker who now earns his living as a chauffeur. But this is only one side of his protean personality, he deals in confidence scams, over-ambitious business promotions (built on the shakiest of foundations) and enjoys approaching life with a philosophical turn...

#fab book (2008-12-03) recommended book. i loved it from start to finish. great author, i hope there will be more titles coming soon.
#Not a good book (2008-12-02) This is not a good book. I read quite a bit and feel like the book world is going mad if it believes that this book is a prize winner. It reads like a high school students attempt at a novel. . . . .
#A brilliant bitter dystopia that leaves a sweet-and-sour taste (2008-11-26) Well, it has now won the Man Booker prize for 2008. But how good is it?This is a book dowsed in cumin, the sour spice that provides the background to countless curries. The novel, as you probably know from other reviewers is about a young man from the Darkness , a metaphorical name for the ancient, rural, landlord-tyrannised, peasant India, who writes a series of letters to the premier of China in anticipation of his forthcoming visit to India. His aim is to tell the truth about an India bifurcated into dar...
#I Just Don t Get It (2008-11-26) I do not know the basis for this book winning the Booker. While it is not a bad read, there is nothing about the book that sticks to the mind once you ve dropped it. It certainly is NOT a compulsive page turner and the feeling one has is were the main character (Balram Halwai) to have been caught or even executed for his crimes, one would frankly not give a damn. Characters fail to elicit the passions and feelings a good book manages to evoke and I came away from this book feeling a little cheated. having just read Vikas Swarup s novel titled Q & ...
#WHAT WAS THE POINT? (2008-11-24) I felt cheated by this book - and by the judges who gave it the Booker. Yes, it was fleetingly funny - but no, it did not appear to have any original message other than the fact that India has a lot of problems. Oh really? I didn t empathise in any way with the narrator, whose sudden transformation from loyal servant was utterly unconvincing. By all means read this as a relaxing, if untaxing, diversion, but do not expect anything more.

Eric Carle s The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a perennial favourite with children and adults alike. Its imaginative illustration and clever cut-out detail charts the progress of a very hungry caterpillar as he eats his way through the week. This board book edition of what is surely a classic picture book is glossy, sturdy and ideal for curious little hands to get to grips with. (Ages 9 months to 2 years)--Susan Harrison

#Hungry for the Caterpillar! (2008-10-14) If you love reading to your child, do not miss this book. It is a delightful, humourous,dream-like surreal book, with a repetitive, poetic, chanting story. It is (deservedly) a children s classic. Many reviewers here have tried to break down the different elements of this book. What I would like to convey is the whole experience of reading the book which teaches a simple life experience to a child - which is highly spiritual, particularly the last pages where a riot of colour is the world through the eyes of a butterfly. The story has optimi...
#A Classic (2008-10-12) Not only is this book fun for young hands, as it s perfectly sized and sturdy, it is also educational. Neither the young boy I got this for or his older brother would put this down for days. It went in the car, to nursery and even to bed
#Yum! (2008-09-16) An infamous short tale of the caterpillar that munches its way through the edible obstacles on each page, until it becomes a butterfly. Arguably the most famous of the Eric Carle short stories, The Hungry Caterpillar symbolises the journeys things take in the world in order to accomplish something great. Themes in this book include the virtue of patience and the fact that things can sometimes take a surprising turn. `The Hungry Caterpillar shows all the great hallmarks of a young children s book, in that it easily lends itself to the curriculum and is as simple as...
#A true classic! (2008-09-14) I was so happy when a friend gave me this when my now 13 month old was born, it reminded me so much of my childhood. I was even happier once he was big enough to start turning it s pages and poking his fingers in the holes and listening intently (well, not always!!) as I counted each different bit of food. He plays with it all the time and it is so hardwearing and virtually indestructible (unlike some other books I have purchsed!). It s so amazing that a book I adored as a child, which I then read to my younger sister (well, more knowing it off by hea...
#Keeps them occupied (2008-08-15) The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a great little book. It keeps my daughter occupied for hours on end. Just a quick flick through it is enough to convince any adult that a small child will like it. Simplistic, enjoyable and charming. And actually quite funny. Well recommended for very small kids.

#Chinese Food Made Easy, the clue is in the title. (2008-12-04) This book certainly, as the title suggests, makes chinese food easy. Having made several attempts at chinese cooking, over many years and using several different chinese cook books, it is only since using Ching s book that I have achieved the results I wanted. It is the best book I have ever used and Ching must be congratulated on it. Fantastic receipes and very useful options and tips. When doing chinese food I only use this book now.
#Authentic Chinese cooking (2008-12-04) I am of Chinese heritage and I can proudly recommend this book. It was about time someone came up with this book for those of us who grew up on Chinese cuisine but find the traditional recipes too difficult to tackle on a day to day basis. Ching s food is typical of home-cooked Chinese food, with exceptions, the recipes here are those you will not normally find on the menu of any Chinese restaurant because these are the recipes that are passed down from generations of home cooks. Some reviewers said the food was bland and I beg to differ. The ...
#Excellent insight to authentic Chinese and not. (2008-10-16) Growing up with a Chinese mother who cooks the best chinese, I have developed a very good palate. I consider myself a foodie and relish in cooking, but always go back to the basics, which is Chinese. This book is an excellent source of inspiration for people who can cook and also easy enough for beginners. A review here said the food was bland and I beg to differ. Growing up in Hong Kong, the Chinese I know relied on the freshest ingredients to deliver the best flavours. Spices were used minimally. Only when you travel ...
#Not so easy (2008-09-25) I entirely agree with the first reviewer, in that these recipes are among the tastiest food I ve ever eaten - and I ve been cooking for over 30 years, including Chinese food. The only criticism I would make is that in some places the text is somewhat light on detail. Anyone tackling the Spicy dofu & edamame beans needs to be aware that you will need a non-stick saucepan to fry the dofu. Since I cook with cast iron saucepans, and stainless steel is widely used, the injunction careful not to break the bean curd needs to be supported by this information. The...
#Bland and Samey (2008-09-15) There must be some easily pleased folks around judging by the reviews. Well, I m not one of them. I ve seen the series and bought my wife the book and we both agree that it s, to say the least uninspired. Most of the recipes use the same basic ingredients regardless of the meat or fish content and generally end up tasting like a rough amalgam of far eastern food. I ve travelled extensively woorldwide through my work and there s not a shred of doubt that most of these rather bland same tasting dishes do not do justice to the real thing. I will admit ...

#Uninspiring (2008-11-14) After reading the very mixed reviews on this page I was eager to see what all the fuss was about with this book. I am not overly concerned about the whole argument on whether or not it is right or wrong to cheat at cooking - although I might add that I am surprised at the anger from those who sit firmly in the latter camp (if you feel so strongly about it, why on earth would you buy a book entitled how to cheat at cooking in the first place?) Personally, I bought the book on the basis that it might provide me with some after-work ideas for a quick meal. ...
#Cheese, cheese and more cheese! (2008-11-05) Far too many of the recipes in this book contain cheese - which I hate. Looking through the book I only like the look of two recipes and one of them is a cake! Also, I wish it would give alternatives e. g so I could substitute my mashed potatoes for the frozen ones listed. Book was bought as a gift and is now on the shelf at the local charity shop.
#WHen young Delia was the cooking edge (2008-10-04) The original How to Cheat at cooking has had an honoured place in our kitchen for 30 years. It was full of great corner cuts based on readily available products and the cheat s worked, like all Delia stuff - This original book didn t depend on which supermarket you used- no corporate recommendations here - just great ways to produce good dishes and sauces with less effort and relatively wholesome ingredients - the new book is different , fun sure, but sooo corporate, - seek out the old one(even as a collectable item it will still be ...
#Poor book, not useful, read back of the packets and save your money (2008-07-08) I don t care to get into the controversy over whether or not this is part of this food movement or whether it sends the right message. . . all I wanted to know when I read it was whether Delia presented simple, day-to-day recipes that I could use when I was in a hurry and wanted something nice for the family. Totally disappointed. Why? -- very simple: I do not need to spend money on a book to tell me to read the back of the packet of pre-packaged foods in the supermarket. I don t have anything again...
#I haven t had the heart to say I cheated!! (2008-05-31) I m really impressed with this book mainly for the reason that it s been my saviour recently for last minute meals that I ve had to prepare for visitors. I haven t had the heart to say I ve cheated but I ve had nothing but compliments for the food, even from my fiancee who can t stand capers!I recommend this for real kitchen cheats who want to guarentee a tasty meal. If you want to sit back and take the full credit yourself, try something else!It s also good value at the moment. I ve not seen it cheaper anywhere else.

#Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. (2008-11-03) This suffers from the same problems as the DVD. It s derivative. There is absolutely nothing that hasn t been said over and over again. It s simplistic. Life can be simple, but that doesn t mean you should treat your audience as if they are too. It s repetitive. Get a variety of different figures in your niche to all say the same things using slightly different words. It s nasty. Follow the philosophy through to it s logical conclusion and you are left with the concept that those who suffer have brought it upon themselves. There may b...
#Promises what it cannot deliver. (2008-10-31) Should you wish to read this book with the sole intention of feeling both good about yourself and the world in general, then you will undoubtedly find that it lifts the spirits and enables you to view everything through the proverbial rose coloured spectacles . If this is all you want to obtain from this book then my heartfelt good wishes to you. If, on the otherhand, you are desirous of creating miracles (as the blurb promises) then you will be sadly disappointed. To preclude all doubt to the point where you are able to effective...
#Is the world controlled by a 1% elite? (2008-10-21) The book and the video are the two sides of the same coin and I would advise you to follow the one or the other. I will suggest though that you concentrate on the video because the commentary between the quotations are nothing but the proof that some people need a lot more explanations and a lot of paraphrase to understand the basic meaning. Are we all without limits? And that is going to be my very first remark. From my long experience I know that some people are physically handicapped, or mentally handicapped, or psychologically...
#Dreadful Twaddle (2008-10-16) After you cut though all the flannel, the secret is revealed. If you think about things they will come to you. No they won t. It takes dedication, persistence and hard work to achieve success, get rich, lose weight or achieve whatever your goal is. This book is delusional and misleading. The elements on positive thinking are fine but they are better expressed in many other self-help books. The secret itself is laughable.
#The Secret and The Scam (2008-10-11) A friend of mine bought me this book for my birthday, explaining that it was a best selling spiritual read, so I was looking forward to what it had to say. I can honestly say I was unimpressed from the start. There was this build to this huge life changing secret and it was like waiting for a huge explosion that never actually went off. This whole Secret is based on wishful, dillusional thnking. It claims that if you want to have money, believe that you will have money and it will come to you. If you want to lose weight, believe that you re...
