It s become a cliché in Britain to call somebody in the entertainment field a national institution -- but that s exactly what Dawn French is. As both comedienne and actress (the latter in both comedy and straight parts), she has become one of the best loved entertainers in the country. Her range is not wide (unlike her dimensions -- and that s the sort of joke she d crack), but she is utterly winning in everything he does. And that quality continues in Dear Fatty, a truly entertaining memoir of an event-packed life. The form of the book is a series of letters by French, conjuring her transformation from a West Country RAF girl to a star of the cult alternative comedy group The Comic Strip. This was followed by the groundbreaking all-female Girls on Top (which did much to establish the position of women in British comedy), the astonishing success of the TV series French and Saunders (with French s equally talented friend Jennifer Saunders) and the sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, where Frenc...

#What a fantastic book to read (2008-11-29) When i first saw the title of her book i was wondering what this book was going to be about. But how wrong i was, the book was honest and to the point. Her revelations about her past really touched me and brought a few tears to my eyes. You clearly see how important her family are to her. Highly recommended!!!
#I love this book (2008-11-25) Dawn French is familiar to many people. She is well known for her comedy and for being half of French and Saunders, and as the wonderful Vicar of Dibley. I personally love reading autobiography, coz I could learn a lot from their life experience. Dear Fatty is mostly about her early days in the Comic Strip, the films she took part in, as well as her recent roles. It is written as a series of letters, to diffrent people, and a large proportion of these are written to her father, who has much affect on her. It is emotional. All in all, I recommend this b...
#Amazing person we love you (2008-11-25) Dawn, anything you write we will love, because you are just an amazing person But this book is a must read for everyone!Jennyxx
#Fat...yes...but funny too! (2008-11-24) I love books that are honest and get to the point. This, most readable of books, manages to do just that. Written in an amusing, yet clever style, the reader is left both entertained and enlightened by a book written by a celebrity - but one that still has the common touch. I certainly cannot imagine the likes of Paris Hilton or Wayne Rooney producing a book so full of vivid prose and amusing stories. If you like books that are honest and funny I also recommend the book: One Love Two Colours: The unlikely marriage of a Punk Rocker & his Afr...
#Bit Disappointed (2008-11-23) I am an avid reader I love autobiographies and although some of it was interesting, I was disappointed in some of it, and she writes letters to family members rather than a flowing biography. Only one letter to her husband who famously cheated on her, but theres no real relation to that, she must be so forgiving and reading it she is. I personally wouldnt recommend it unless you got it from a car boot for £2 then it may be worth reading, sorry Dawn but ive read much better

The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Standard Edition In December 2007, J.K. Rowling unveiled The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a very special book of five fairy tales illustrated by the bard herself, embellished with silver ornaments and mounted moonstones. Amazon was fortunate to come into possession of one of the original copies, and it was our privilege to share images and reviews of this incredible artifact. Now J.K. Rowling is giving millions of Harry Potter fans worldwide cause for celebration with a new edition of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, available December 4, 2008. Offering the trademark wit and imagination familiar to Rowling s legions of readers--as well as Aesop s wisdom and the occasional darkness of the Brothers Grimm--each of these five tales reveals a lesson befitting children and parents alike: the strength gained with a trusted friendship, the redemptive power of love, and the true magic that exists in the hearts of all of us. Rowling s new introduction also comments on ...

#Love the book, but needed more (2008-12-04) I ve just finished reading this book, and just have to let people who care for HP (my friends are not fans) know what I think. Before I give my own review of this book I just want to say that I am a huge harry potter fan, to the extent that I actually have a deathly hallows tattoo on my bottom. I m also quite ill right now, but I fought against my horrid cold to read this book. I ve been really excited about this book coming out, as I too wanted another fix of harry potter. I was delighted when my book came with that familiar harry pott...
#one of rowling s best (2008-12-04) I have to say that this is so much better than the last Harry Potter book. All of the short stories are brilliant (although the Warlock s Hairy Heart was very disturbing and the Warlock does remind me a lot of Voldemort) and are light hearted and witty. My favourite was the Fountain of Fair Fortune and the ending of this one reminds me a lot of the time when Harry gives Ron some fake Felix Felicis . What was also interesting was Dumbledore s notes as it gives more insight into Dumbledore s character, his thoughts and he tells us of some of his m...
#Potter Parables (2008-12-04) This is a collection of five short parables, which remind me very much of reading Aesop s fables as a child. They are well written and thoughtful about the weaknesses of human character especially if you live in a world where magic is real. They are well written tales of fears and desires. For me they are actually better in some ways than the last Harry Potter book, because to tell a story with a message in such a small space and with originality and imagination is a serious challenge. They are going to be perfect bed-time reading for my children and you...
#OMG (2008-12-04) Harry Potter got a little tedious before the end, I m sure many of you will agree and now, a Harry Potter spin off. I am disappointed. . .
#jk does it again! (2008-12-04) Just finished reading it through now as i also got the special edition but wanted a copy i could properly read without worrying about damage! its a lovely little book, fantastic value and for a good cause! this would be perfect for any harry potter fan or for younger children who have not yet read harry potter. lets hope this isn t the last installment from JK on the wizarding world!

#He is brilliant (2008-11-26) I am always interested in people s life story, especially that of famous people. He is the proud of black people. I am still reading this book, haven t finished it yet, but really enjoying it. I can learn a lot from it.
#What a load of pish!! (2008-11-24) Well, this book is just like Obama. . . Wake up!! Obama is not the messiah!!!You have to live your own lives,. . . I mean, i understand the Americans falling for his vapid charm, but Europeans? The real powers that be just changed the puppet! You don t like Bush anymore. . . fine have this clever black guy. . . it s all the same to us. YOu ve been conned!!!As for change we need - well, yes, i guess war in Afghanistan is needed by arms dealers. . .
#Honesty, clarity...in short a template for politicians to follow. (2008-11-23) One can only admire both the man and the book - mainly for its 100 per cent honesty and sheer breadth of subject matter. This, truly, is the 21st century approach to political memoir writing. The cross party/racial appeal of Obama is because he can transcend the barriers that we put upon ourselves - barriers that he himself hurdled throughout his political and social life. The gift that Obama has - and one that comes through in his writing - is his ability to connect with the reader, regardless of their e...
#Simple but elegantly written (2008-11-20) Obama completely embraces the importance of effective communication as reflected on this book. I like the part where he realized how important is saying the right words and get the people s undivided attention to what he is saying.
#Best Book I ve read in 10 yrs. (2008-11-20) He describes his childhood to manhood in such a sensitive & interesting way. An honest & frank look at race issues that he had to consider due to his mixed race & ancestry. Until I d read the book, I hadn t realised how deep he was. I Highly Recommend this book! Once I started it , I then looked forward to my next train journeys, to get the next instalment. And its now solved my Xmas gift ideas! I m buying 10 x copies for friends & family. Great Writer!

#fail safe dinners (2008-12-03) I am quite a confident cook, having plenty of practise with four kids !! I do love this book, I got it as a gift for someone for christmas, but alas i started reading it , then cooking from it and now it is mine ! Will have to get another copy for christmas gift!! Recipies are full of flavour and anyone could try their hand,if you can t make something tasty from this book then stay out of the kitchen ,-) !!
#Ministry of Food (2008-11-26) Jamie s Ministry of Food is a book teaching you how to cook. I really enjoyed it and have started to cook by myself as well. It changed me a lot, especially for the one who rarely cook by herself. and it is easy to learn too, I never thought cooking could be that easy and enjoyable. Now I love cooking, and by watching all the dishes I finished, I m so proud.
#Inspiring (2008-11-24) I have this book with a couple of months now and felt it unreasonable to post a review until I had tried some of the recipes. Well the time has come so here goes. I m delighted to own this book and I feel I will be using it on a regular basis for years to come. This book goes into detail with many of the questions I would be embarrassed to ask and the other cookbooks presume we know. Jamie takes us from the simple how to boil an egg to some exquisite stews, roasts and pies and for the more adventurous among us some paellas and curry dishes. Jamie makes it look...
#Proper fuss free food. (2008-11-22) I got this book with the aim of getting my 14 year old to cook, however my husband hasn t put it down yet and he has made nearly every recipe in the book. We needed to change the way we ate and this book has given loads of ways to do that. (In fact it was exactly the kick up the bum we needed to get away from ready made meals etc. )Jamie, I want to thank you for writing this book!Oh and I have given it away as a present. . . does that count for the pass it on???
#Nice Idea, some of the recipes are very bland. (2008-11-21) I enjoyed the TV programme and as I m somewhat of a basic cook I decided to try the book. The book is well written and the recipes are very easy to follow, only problem is the taste! I ve tried about six of the main courses and in there original state without adding extras, they re extremely bland. Would recommend Can t Cook Want to Learn if your a beginner and its much cheaper.

#Top Gear for children (2008-12-02) I bought the Big Book of Top Gear 2009 but returned it immediately as it is far too childish. It is a bit like buying a comic book for kids. Very disappointing. I m giving it one star just because it s nearly Christmas.
#Good book to accompany the series (2008-11-29) My brother (who s in his late 20 s) saw this book and said he wanted it, so i first went out to check it out. I forgot to check this book out but looked at the annual, but found that to be aimed at children (incidently, i found the annual is very good and has lots to do in it). I then ordered it and after reading some bad reviews, i started to worry. Today, i went into a shop and saw one, and to settle my nerves, i had a look at it. I enjoyed what i read of it. For those who complain that there are things from the series in it, it is...
#FUNNY (2008-11-19) I don t even watch Top Gear that religiously but I bought the book for my brother for Christmas. I opened it to write a message in the cover and ended up reading most of it! I laughed out loud on so many occasions, it is SO funny!! As funny if not funnier than the show.
#A Marmite book, if ever there was one... (2008-11-17) You have to be a fan of the show to even have a chance of liking it (too many in-jokes for anyone who doesn t watch it regularly) but even then it s still gonna divide readers into two groups, lovers and haters. To love it you ll most likely have to be either a teenager or one of those spikey-haired Evo-with-big-exhaust owners (or wanabee owners) who really think all the lads messing about on-screen is GENUINELY funny, rather than just very mildly amusing and worth putting up with in order to see the good bits of the show. I...
#Excellent value and fun!!! (2008-11-17) This easy read is this years ultimate stocking filler. It will make you want to re-watch all of the Top Gear episodes, so would be the perfect accompaniment to a box set. It is appropriate for any age, and you don t even have to be a fan of the show. Be prepared to experience `lol moments, and don t take it too seriously. excellent value for money!!!
