Perhaps only the fantasy duo of King Kong and Bambi could be a more bizarre pairing than Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Yet on Raising Sand, their haunting and brilliant collaboration, the Led Zeppelin screamer and Nashville s most hypnotic song whisperer seem made for each other. This, however, is not the howling Plant of Whole Lotta Love, but a far more precise and softer singer than even the one who emerged with Dreamland (2002). No matter that Plant seems so subdued as to be on downers, for that s one of the keys to this most improbable meeting of musical galaxies--almost all of it seems slowed down, out of time, otherworldly, and at times downright David Lynch-ian, the product of an altered consciousness. Yet probably the main reason it all works so well is the choice of producer T Bone Burnette, the third star of the album, who culled mostly lesser-known material from some of the great writers of blues, country, folk, gospel, and R&B, including Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Milt ...

#Hypnotic (2008-08-19) I was hesitant about this purchase but once I listened to it. . WOW!! Very relaxing and the 2 voices were ment to sing together. It s a perfect cd for a romantic night or a diner party. Robert Plant is a man of many talents. . from ROCK GOD OF THE 70 S to a mature and mello Rock God!!!
#GREAT CD (2008-01-22) Being a Zep fan it was hard to imagine how this work would turn out but it is fantastic. It may take a bit to get used to a more mellow Robert Plant but the more you listen the more addictive it becomes. A great addition to any cd collection regardless of your taste in music.
#Superb! (2008-01-08) I recommend this album to all music lovers regardless of your genre leanings. Krauss voice is simply stunning (I cannot think of a female vocalist with a more pure, subtle or beautiful voice) and Plant has finally learned to sing properly!!! Don t get me wrong -- I am a dedicated Zep fan -- but this is the first time I have heard his voice truly shine. Love this album s version of Please Read the Letter and Sister Rosetta gives me goosebumps. Highly, highly recommended. It s too bad the immature and vacuous review by Jean-pierre Falardeau Jeeparoo had to scar t...
#Borefest (2008-01-03) Boring. . . . . Boring. . . . . . . . Why did plant do this I don t know. . . . He must be gettin old. Good CD if you are an insomniac !!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
#Quite Over-Hyped, But Still Pretty Good! (2007-12-30) This album has received a ton of hype, and in some senses it is warranted. The combination of Plant and Krauss is in itself something of a spectacle that is guaranteed to get attention. But I m struck with the fact that they actually go together pretty well musically! It sounds like they ve been together for a long time. Throughout, this CD is soothing and composed quaintly. The entire thing has a nice, smooth cohesion to it. But yet, the individual tracks are generally not all that impressive on their own. Only 3 tracks real...

#another great solo effort! (2005-06-20) Robert Plant just keeps getting better with every project he does, i will always be a Plant fan for his dedication and presentation of his majestic music
#One of the few GREAT postzepp albums by Plant. (2003-07-16) Maybe thru with the two step [isn t great], but the album is fairly consistently good. It really isn t as bad as one would think judging by some of the things he would release in the future like walking into clarksdale and Now and Zen. This was really a fair attempt to move forward for Plant and for the most part it WORKED. It isn t Led Zeppelin , but it is good and interesting if you like the softer side of Zepp- this really isn t too much an eighties sound for Plant, YET, Plant slowly lets go of the 70s here. Good if yo...
#Taking a step back (2003-02-12) It s rather refreshing to see such an accomplished singer as Robert Plant take a step back from the self-indulgent bombasity that marked - and marred - some of Led Zep s later works, and turn out such a fine album as ",The Principle of Moments. ", This is a consistent work, full of simple songs well-performed and sung. ",In the Mood", still hold up after all these years as an excellent song, dreadfull video notwhithstanding. There are no real rockers here - all of the songs on this CD are mellow, introspective, generaly pleasent to li...
#First of his classical albums (2002-11-20) This one I bought a few months after it came out. But, it grew on me, and now Big Log is my classical song, the song of the songs.
#PLANT S BEST POST-ZEP (2001-12-13) This is simply one of the best rock albums of the early 80 s, a clever blending of musical styles of the day. Phil Collins is on board for most of the tracks, kicking (. . . ) just before he went the path of lameness where he resides today. With Collins beautifully intricate beats, Robbie Blunt s ethereal guitar and compositions full of light and just enough keyboards, Plant delivers the finest solo offering of his career to date. Thru With The Twostep is worth the price of the disc alone. Big Log expresses something that is inexpressible in ...

The title of this bonus-track-rich, 10-disc chronicle of Robert Plant s post-Led Zeppelin career refers not only to the number of solo albums the singer has released since Zep flamed out in 1980, but also his penchant for stubborn endurance and artistic reinvention in the face of time and the tides of fashion. While both Plant and Jimmy Page have never been able to fully escape the lengthy shadows of their original world-beating collaboration, it s the vocalist who s best--if irregularly--tempered, teased, and folded Zep s legacy into his mercurial solo career, with his 1982 debut Pictures at Eleven and 1988 s Now & Zen being the most overt about it. More crucial to Plant s restless muse has been a willingness to move beyond Led Zeppelin, whether successfully casting a more structured set of songs in synth-drenched new wave veneer on Principle of Moments (supplemented here by the previously unreleased Turnaround and three live cuts, including an unlikely cover of Bob Marley s Lively Up...

While it kicked considerable ass to see Robert Plant reunite with his old Led Zeppelin sidekick Jimmy Page, we all knew he would rather put on his skintight Nurses Do It Better T-shirt than have to sing Kashmir one more time. Over the last few years, the man perplexingly called Percy by his close friends immersed himself in his massive collection of 60s psych-folk records, put together a new band, and made a gorgeous solo album. Comprising mostly lush readings of little-known hits, it includes a heartbreaking take of Tim Buckley s Song to the Siren, a supremely affecting run-through of Bob Dylan s One More Cup of Coffee, and, best of all, a rarefied version of Tim Rose s Morning Dew. And his version of the Youngbloods Darkness, Darkness is the sexiest thing this side of Jeff Buckley s Everybody Here Wants You. --Aidin Vaziri

#great solo work! (2005-06-19) this is a very majectic album and i love this style of robert s music. I love Darkness, Darkness. . awesome job!
#This CD is one of his best solo efforts in MANY years! (2004-07-10) The music is rich in sound and makes you want to wear headphones at night with no distractions. I recently started playing all my older Plant CDs and then found this one at the store and was BLOWN AWAY. Yes it s mainly cover songs but the production values are well worth the listen, and he does justice to Dylan s One More Cup of Coffee from the Desire album (my fave Dylan album). Morning Dew is a sad but beautifully done song, and Plant s interpretation of Hey Joe is quite different from the one we re used to ala He...

#Surviving the Peak . . . (2004-07-08) Robert Plant continues to climb by building his own stairway upon Monsalvat! The air s very thin and the climb strewn with failed expeditions. Few endevors outside of the very best classical music can bring about such an emotional upheaval. Pure grace glides from the speakers and takes you on a journey to distant realms. I agree the disc centers on death, but it is the celebration of a life well lived, not the regrets of unfulfilled potential. I caught the Austin City Limits repeat several months ago and was so engaged, it never occurred to me t...
#Sibilance and harshness ruin terrific content (2004-04-26) This is a review of Robert Plant s ",Dreamland", CD, which I purchased after watching Plant s performance during the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. A lot has already been said about the content of this CD and I am equally positive about it. What has me bewildered is the recording quality - the entire CD is overly bright. I mean, bright to the point of harshness that makes it painful to listen to. I have to turn the treble down quite a bit and it still can t compensate for the brightness and excessive sibilance in Pl...

#the worst of the worst! (2004-07-10) this has to be one of the worst tapes i have ever bought. the only redeaming song on this thing is little by little and compared to his older material, just doesn`t add up.
#Fearless... (2004-05-20) You know, most people seem to malign this album, the last with his best band (echoing a previous sentiment). This album was both a direct response to the music Plant was hearing at the time and a direct break from the Zeppelin albatross. People who don t like this disc might have a problem with its synth sound or the fact that it doesn t sound anything like the previous two albums or anything past it, but allowing it to stand on its own merit, free from the ",but it doesn t sound like Zeppelin", whine that prevails against so much of his solo work, ...
#Not for casual fans (2003-09-05) This album has some terrific highlights but I d also venture to say it has 2 or 3 of the worst misses Robert ever put to tape. It was experimental, even by his standards, and in that respect, it was freeing and achieved some new things but some of them just aren t pleasant or interesting listening. I give it 3 stars as a fan. I d expect a casual listener or fan of Zeppelin era material to give this closer to a 1. 5 or 2 stars and only because they might fondly remember ",Little by Little", being included on the soundtrack of an episode of &q...
#Doing what he loves to do. (2002-11-20) This one I was excited to buy, as it came out straight after the beautiful Honeydrippers album. I am proud of Plant for trying to reinvent himself and making a modern sound out of Zep. But only Little by Little and Sixes and Sevens are instant classics.
#Worth A Listen if You Have An Open Mind (2002-06-22) I bought this album when it was originally released and was very disappointed. I was looking for something more similar to Plant s first two solo efforts, Principle of Moments, and Pictures at 11. This album is a big departure from those albums and from previous Zeppelin works. However, 15 or so years later, giving the album a second chance, I see that it is not so bad. You have to have an open-mind to appreciate it though and not be expecting something similar to the prior works I mention. It is more upbeat and seems le...
