#Oscar Peterson s Trio Performance:One of the Best. (2003-07-02) This re-release by Verve preserves, in my opinion, one of the best trio performances. In the Still of the Night , Peterson s subtle single melody nuances and left hand chords are complimented by Ray Brown s wonderful bass. Ed Thigpen maintains the tempo with his stylish brush technique. The rest of the CD is hampered only slightly by the volme inconsistencies from one number to the next, created by the studio. This is a great CD.
#BUY IT EYES CLOSED (2003-05-31) OSCAR PETERSON s 1959 piano tribute to COLE PORTER is a joy even if it s only 33 minutes long. We could have take an another half hour of this music. What makes it so enjoyable is the variety of moods it delivers. There was actually another PORTER songbook recorded in mono, but for a reason i ignore, they did not coupled it with this one to make it last longer. A message to VERVE:did they lost the masters of the RICHARD RODGERS songbook, and if not, what are they waiting for?
#Oscar Peterson is S wonderful (2003-01-26) How can one go wrong setting Cole Porter music down. . . How can the Great Oscar Peterson go wrong either? He didn t. Oscar is a shining example of what makes a truely wonderful, gifted musician. His dynamics, touch and feeling are really a joy to listen to. Well done! Enjoy!
#cole porter and rythm (2001-02-25) well, i can play Cole in 1. 000 ways . All the ways are wonderful.
#Yes, oh yes, indeed, yes, yes, yes! (2000-05-20) Every time I play this CD people ask about it. I have never seen something so universally loved. It creates and sustains a lazy summer afternoon mood like no other.

It s hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century s best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Wave, a collection of 1967 dates featuring keyboardist Jobim backed by an extensive orchestra, straddles that line: it s full of amazing original compositions, but the arrangements have a certain faux suave, late- 60s lounge feel that reeks of stale cheese. The result is actually great, the veneer of kitsch insidiously masking Jobim s trademark immeasurable sadness, which creeps up on you and leaves you unexpectedly affected. --Keven McAlester

#The Music of Antonio Carlos Hobim (2004-07-16) Jobim Music is to float on a cloud of dreams. I have most of his music performed by all the great Brazilian artists including a a superb rendition by Frank Sinatra {not Brazilian}Ilove this CD. Although it is Instrumental The music is divine. Jobim inspires love and romance in me. From Arti a 24 years GUY
#The ultimate bossa nova album, and Tom Jobim s best (2004-03-18) I just received this album, today, and I can t get enough of it! I had sampled listening to the tracks after being attracted to Wave s unique album cover with the giraffe silhouetted in a green sky background. (The picture on the back with Tom Jobim in silhouette is also nice, adding a haunting, dramatic touch. ) I immediately fell in love with this album, and had to order it. All of the tracks on Tom Jobim s Wave are bossa novas - bossa nova being my favorite style of Brazilian music. One can t help imagine being on...
#A Must Have (2004-02-24) This CD is a classic, no doubt about it. It s a release that I would have to recommend to anyone that s a fan of Bossa Nova and Antonio Carlos Jobim s music. To many, Wave is like the essence of Bossa Nova and a cornerstone in the genre. Simply put, you haven t heard all there is to hear of Bossa Nova if you haven t heard this. I love this CD - I can put it in no matter the time of day and unwind and relax. It has soothing orchestration, gentle touches of life and the musicianship is stellar, of course, and it s very romantic. It s almost like there s...
#Chillout, lounge... this is where it all began (2004-02-06) Close your eyes, forget about names and time. If you do that, you can picture ",The Red House",, the now-legendary ",Triste",, the 3/4 ",Mojave", or ",Lamento", being recorded by some of the 21st century s hottest chillout acts. . . but truth is that it s yet another revival (not implying that today s work lacks value or originality). . . quite simply, Tom Jobim did this back 1967, with his new Bossa (Bossa Nova) in this follow through to classics such as ",The Girl from Ipanema",, &q...
#A Wonderful CD (2003-11-04) This is an absolute masterpiece! It proves once again that Antonio Carlos Jobim was a genious in his own right. This is strickly an instrumental CD, with vocals on only one song, however the arrangments are beautiful. This is a MUST HAVE for any bossa nova fan!

#Musically sublime, stereo seperation maddening! (2007-11-08) Ok first of all, musically, this album is incredible and you can t go wrong. So why 3 stars? Simply because there s this manner in many conversions to CD of old recordings these days to SEPERATE THE INTRUMENTS IN DIFFERENT CHANNELS. I find this REALLY awful in the fact that, for the whole album, the saxophone comes out MY LEFT EAR. The drums, MY RIGHT. The only instrument which is actually well balanced is the piano. This is down right UNBEARABLE for half an hour! I don t understand what these guys were thinking!A...
#Unhelpful, but true (2004-08-31) This album may serve as an acid test - if you don t like it, you don t like jazz, and never will. The flawless interplay of the four voices in this work builds upon all that came before and anticipates all that came after. Those who don t like it - and these are few an far between - are usually aggressively drowsy conservatives who listen to Coltrane wishing listfully that his genius had not arrived on the scene to disturb the sanguine haze that was American music in the late 50 s. A Love Supreme created a new musical idiom in which the depth of huma...
#Heavenly (2004-06-26) I m a big fan of Coltrane, and though I at least like all of his material, several albums stand out to me as really being special. This is definitely one of them. I enjoy Coltrane s fast playing, but have always felt that he played better when he dropped the tempo down a bit. Now, there is a lot of playing on this album that I wouldn t necessarily call slow, but it s more relaxed and ",tender", than some of his other work. I feel that this is the best of his earlier work. John really hit it out of the park with this one. Every music fan should, if not...
#A Supreme Racket (2004-06-23) Acknowledgement? Resolution? Pursuance? Psalm? Why didn t he just make it all one song and call it ",Crazy", instead? Thats what it is. It s an hour of Coltrane going just absolutely bonkers on tenor sax. Of course that s what Coltrane does anyway, but he s just in outer space on this record. He mangles and twists the hell out of his horn in modal and chromatic spasms and sometimes will just wail on one or two notes or non-notes like like he s screaming into the the thing. Meanwhile, the piano player just puches and plunks and slams and rol...
#My Love Supreme (2004-06-12) For something like John Coltrane s A Love Supreme to move the human being to such heightening cannot be overstated in any realm of adulation, regardless of praise s nature tendency to overvalue. It was less than two years ago that, by chance, this disc found it s way into a CD player that I had been borrowing. As a shallow jazzist, at best, I was one day perusing through the limited Jazz section of an independent CD/bookstore in Whistler, BC. I had listened to much Coltrane by then, but only selectively. The limits of my Trane knowledge where painfully ...

1. I Want to Be Happy 2. Pennies from Heaven 3. Ballad Medley: Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered/I Don t Know Why I 4. I m Glad There Is You 5. Tour s End 6. I Was Doing All Right 7. Bronx Blues 8. Three Little Words 9. Detour Ahead 10. Sunday 11. Blues for Herky

Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson were both consummate performers, comfortable at any tempo, when they met for this 1957 recording, and they re clearly enjoying one another s skills on ballads and uptempo tunes alike. The group is one of the finest editions of Peterson s trios, with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. It s virtually a machine for quiet swing, and the absence of a drummer lets Getz s silky sound come to the fore with all its details intact. For all his fame as a virtuosic pianist, Peterson is an underrated accompanist. He complements a soloist with deft fills and unobtrusive propulsion, and the backgrounds he supplies here are as subtle as his solos are extroverted. The program is a good mix of standards and Getz originals, including the joyous Tour s End, while the extended ballad medley could define jazz lyricism. There s also a brief but infectious version of Ellis s Detour Ahead, the guitarist s early and highly successful foray into songwriting. --Stuart Broomer

#Heavenly hour of swingin sax and piano from 1957... (2004-04-01) This is the most enjoyable of the three Getz CD s I own, and of course, Oscar and his playing partners are superb, whether soloing or supporting. This has a great mix of uptempo and ballad tracks, and gives Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass some shining moments as well as the principals. There are ten earlier reviews posted here, and most of those folks agree with me that this is one of best albums to come out of what I consider the golden age of jazz. . . the second half of the 50 s. I m not sure why the 19...
#The Oscar Peterson Trio - at work. Quality counts! (2004-03-09) The Oscar Peterson Trio did a number of these releases featuring artists of the day. Stan Getz is another one who, with the help of the OPT, shines. Check out the OPT with Louis Armstrong. . . excellent craftmanship, and so is Stan Getz. The OPT set a standard for this type of collaboration. The sound quality is good, during periods of quiet some hiss is evident, this is probably caused by the tape quality and lack of effective filters for this white noise back when these recordings were put down on acetate. As ...
#Very enjoyable (2004-03-01) Check all of the other reviews for the technical talk of keeping time or the lack of a percussion session. Let me just add that many times during the album, I found my foot stomping to the beat. To me, that is the best litmus test out there!! The ballad medley can only be bettered by the swing of the blues numbers on this album. Truly an exceptional meeting of exceptional artists.
#One of Stan Getz greatest recordings (2003-08-28) Certainly the previous reviewers have said it all, but I ll simply add that Getz tone seems to actually benefit (or his playing does) from the lack of a percussionist - even though Herb Ellis 4/4 may qualify - much as it did 3 decades later with Kenny Barron on ",People Time",. No, this is even better. ",Pennies From Heaven", is absolutely flawless with Stan soaring both before and, especially, after the key change. The ",Ballad Medley", is gorgeous. Oscar plays perfectly under Stan when needed and doesn t...
#One of the best albums ever (2003-05-07) This CD got me started in cool jazz, and now I m hooked. I ve heard many other CDs by comparable artists, but this one remains one of my favorites. And I m convinced it s not pure sentimentality on my part. In fact, if someone were to say to me, ",I don t know anything about jazz, but I d like to try it out,", I would point them to this CD. If you like music (and I mean music in general, not only jazz), how can you not find this CD tasty?

The Songbooks recorded by Ella Fitzgerald during the 50s and 60s make up one of the great historical landmarks of jazz. First off, they are, like the Capitol recordings by Frank Sinatra--irresistible. These are some of the best popular songs ever written, sung by one of the finest voices jazz has known. The arrangements and bands, written and led by people like Billy May, Nelson Riddle and Duke Ellington were without flaw. The tracks include one of the most expensive assemblies of jazz stars one could imagine--including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Buddy de Franco, Ben Webster, Harry Edison, Barney Kessel, Stuff Smith, Willie Smith and Bob Cooper. Impresario Norman Granz, whose idea it was, organised the sessions without caring about the cost, and so every aspect of the recordings is the best possible. The original books spread over about 20 LPs or a dozen CDs. This CD crystallises the best, from the elegant, as typified by the heart-breaking Miss Otis Regrets, to the frantically hot,...

#Ella at her best (2002-10-10) It seems unfair to give this masterful collection four rather than five stars for what can only be termed religious reasons, but there you go. An outstanding CD, capturing Fitzgerald in all her perfection. If you love her, it s all here, but I find myself wishing she put more personality, more emotion, more soul into her music. In that spirit, I take one star and give it to Sarah Vaughan, my favorite jazz vocalist of them all.
#The Best of the Best of the Best (2002-10-09) It has been awhile since I have read all of the wonderful reviews for this CD. As the man who chose the songs, sequenced them and wrote the album notes, it is one of the high points of my career that so many of you love listening to this CD as much as I did making it. It was indeed a difficult assignment, narrowing down all the songs from Ella s songbook series to just these, but I hope I put in something for everybody. I agree that as a collection, there is no better representation of the best of singing, songwriting and musical arrangi...
#Sweet, Sweet Ella (2002-04-27) This collection of songs-- the best of the Cole Porter Songbooks- is a must-have if you re an Ella fan, or just interested in Ella in general. Who can resist that lovely voice? Those wonderful songs? Ella Fitzgerald sings these songs the way they should be sung.
#Invaluable Resource (2001-12-14) Even though I have most of the original vinyl releases, my respect for the ",great", American composers required that I secure them in a more stable digitalized format. Having said that, I must admit the addition of these ",Best of--", collections of the Songbooks to a listener s library is not all gravy. Just as the ",Best of--", collections of Sinatra material destroyed the thematic integrity of the original ",concept", albums, these Ella samplers tend to blur the focus of the originals, which was squarely on the co...
#A True Classic CD of American Classic Songs (2001-12-09) This is a classic and one of Ella Fitzgerald s best CD s. She sings these classic songs like nobody (NOBODY) else can. She must have the most remarkable voice in modern history, except maybe the tenor opera singers. This collection features Ella s more mainstream, pop music. The songs themselves command respect, and Ella sings them mostly straight and so very lovely. But if you want to experience Ella at her peak, you need to hear her live in a jazzier environment, where she takes off the gloves and blows everyone away with...
