#Oscar Peterson s Trio Performance:One of the Best. (2003-07-02) This re-release by Verve preserves, in my opinion, one of the best trio performances. In the Still of the Night , Peterson s subtle single melody nuances and left hand chords are complimented by Ray Brown s wonderful bass. Ed Thigpen maintains the tempo with his stylish brush technique. The rest of the CD is hampered only slightly by the volme inconsistencies from one number to the next, created by the studio. This is a great CD.
#BUY IT EYES CLOSED (2003-05-31) OSCAR PETERSON s 1959 piano tribute to COLE PORTER is a joy even if it s only 33 minutes long. We could have take an another half hour of this music. What makes it so enjoyable is the variety of moods it delivers. There was actually another PORTER songbook recorded in mono, but for a reason i ignore, they did not coupled it with this one to make it last longer. A message to VERVE:did they lost the masters of the RICHARD RODGERS songbook, and if not, what are they waiting for?
#Oscar Peterson is S wonderful (2003-01-26) How can one go wrong setting Cole Porter music down. . . How can the Great Oscar Peterson go wrong either? He didn t. Oscar is a shining example of what makes a truely wonderful, gifted musician. His dynamics, touch and feeling are really a joy to listen to. Well done! Enjoy!
#cole porter and rythm (2001-02-25) well, i can play Cole in 1. 000 ways . All the ways are wonderful.
#Yes, oh yes, indeed, yes, yes, yes! (2000-05-20) Every time I play this CD people ask about it. I have never seen something so universally loved. It creates and sustains a lazy summer afternoon mood like no other.

#Good collection (2004-05-24) from one of the smoothed Vocalist Ever. Johnny Mathis has a timeless Quality when it comes to His range&stylings as a Singer. these songs have been on other packages but still are cool. Chances are is the kind of song that still sounds fresh as it did when it first was released to radio.
#So Much To Choose From, But There Are Songs Missing...... (2004-05-13) Johnny s recorded 100 plus albums in his career, a two disc set just can t summarize that much material, still, there are a few signature tunes missing. ",Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me", which warrented inclusion on the soundtrack but not the soundtrack album of ",To Wong Foo", is rather a sore spot for me, I really want that song and the album is out of print. ",You Who Brought Me Love", performed with Patti Austin and featured on the t. v. soap ",General Hospital", was a huge A/...
#Why all the mono? (2004-05-09) Nice selection of songs, but why are almost all of the early hits in mono? Some of these have been available in stereo before and for the remaining few, I hoped that they might remix them to stereo if the 2-track tapes still existed. Oh well. . .

The Songbooks recorded by Ella Fitzgerald during the 50s and 60s make up one of the great historical landmarks of jazz. First off, they are, like the Capitol recordings by Frank Sinatra--irresistible. These are some of the best popular songs ever written, sung by one of the finest voices jazz has known. The arrangements and bands, written and led by people like Billy May, Nelson Riddle and Duke Ellington were without flaw. The tracks include one of the most expensive assemblies of jazz stars one could imagine--including the Duke Ellington Orchestra, Buddy de Franco, Ben Webster, Harry Edison, Barney Kessel, Stuff Smith, Willie Smith and Bob Cooper. Impresario Norman Granz, whose idea it was, organised the sessions without caring about the cost, and so every aspect of the recordings is the best possible. The original books spread over about 20 LPs or a dozen CDs. This CD crystallises the best, from the elegant, as typified by the heart-breaking Miss Otis Regrets, to the frantically hot,...

#Ella at her best (2002-10-10) It seems unfair to give this masterful collection four rather than five stars for what can only be termed religious reasons, but there you go. An outstanding CD, capturing Fitzgerald in all her perfection. If you love her, it s all here, but I find myself wishing she put more personality, more emotion, more soul into her music. In that spirit, I take one star and give it to Sarah Vaughan, my favorite jazz vocalist of them all.
#The Best of the Best of the Best (2002-10-09) It has been awhile since I have read all of the wonderful reviews for this CD. As the man who chose the songs, sequenced them and wrote the album notes, it is one of the high points of my career that so many of you love listening to this CD as much as I did making it. It was indeed a difficult assignment, narrowing down all the songs from Ella s songbook series to just these, but I hope I put in something for everybody. I agree that as a collection, there is no better representation of the best of singing, songwriting and musical arrangi...
#Sweet, Sweet Ella (2002-04-27) This collection of songs-- the best of the Cole Porter Songbooks- is a must-have if you re an Ella fan, or just interested in Ella in general. Who can resist that lovely voice? Those wonderful songs? Ella Fitzgerald sings these songs the way they should be sung.
#Invaluable Resource (2001-12-14) Even though I have most of the original vinyl releases, my respect for the ",great", American composers required that I secure them in a more stable digitalized format. Having said that, I must admit the addition of these ",Best of--", collections of the Songbooks to a listener s library is not all gravy. Just as the ",Best of--", collections of Sinatra material destroyed the thematic integrity of the original ",concept", albums, these Ella samplers tend to blur the focus of the originals, which was squarely on the co...
#A True Classic CD of American Classic Songs (2001-12-09) This is a classic and one of Ella Fitzgerald s best CD s. She sings these classic songs like nobody (NOBODY) else can. She must have the most remarkable voice in modern history, except maybe the tenor opera singers. This collection features Ella s more mainstream, pop music. The songs themselves command respect, and Ella sings them mostly straight and so very lovely. But if you want to experience Ella at her peak, you need to hear her live in a jazzier environment, where she takes off the gloves and blows everyone away with...

#A GUY FROM NEW ORLEANS SAYS IT S THE BEST LOUIS OF THEM ALL! (2004-03-11) 1 KNOW THERE ARE A LOT (ABOUT 35, ACTUALLY) OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG S GREATEST HITS CDs OUT THERE. I HAVE 31 OF HIS TAPES AND CDs MYSELF! JAZZ IS MY FAVORITE MUSIC (THAT AND GOTHIC/INDUSTRIAL), AND BEING ORIGINALLY FROM NEW ORLEANS, DOWN SOUTH, I HAVE HEARD MORE JAZZ THAN MOST. BUT I JUST HAVE TO SAY THAT OF ALL THE LOUIS BEST ALBUMS, THIS ONE CONTAINS THE MOST OF HIS REALLY, TRULY BEST NUMBERS. THE MOST POPULAR SONGS ON THIS RECORD INCLUDE: MACK THE KNIFE, HELLO DOLLY, WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, BLUEBERRY HILL, LA VI...
#Louis Armstrong Was The Epitome Of Jazz And Always Will Be (2003-09-17) The above caption comes from the seven pages of wonderful liner notes written by Will Friedwald, the author of Jazz Singing, and is attributed to the great Duke Ellington. Who, it is safe to say, knew what he was talking about when it came to Jazz. Interspersed with the notes are a few more photographs of Louis and several LP/45/78 reproductions. A discography of the contents completes the package, although chart performances are not recorded. Louis, of course, was selling thousands upon thousands of records long...
#Great (2003-03-24) This is a Very Good cd listen to 11
#Smiles and Tears: Perfect Introducton to Jazz (2003-03-08) Louis Armstrong brought such emotions to my music collection. My, a child grew up on rap, fell in love with and old dead man and his beautiful songs. He introducted me to jazz music and expanded my horizons. That was three years ago. I now am a jazz fanatic. Louis brought my jazz life out of the womb. This ablum lacks the great early jazz recorded by Satchmo and some increditable duets with Ella Fitsgerald and many more. But one CD can only be so long and like I said a perfect introduction to jazz music specifical...
#Alltime Great- NO DOUBT About it! (2003-02-13) I work with a very diverse group of individuals. Despite our differences, one of the favorites of my collection that everyone enjoys is this collection of louis armstrong favorites. This music feels like part of life itself, I can t imagine not knowing these songs. Simply great art and wonderfully done music. Perfect for a sun soaked sunday with lemonade or tea in the summer. Or just any time for that matter, great soothing enjoyable alltime classics. Treat yourself to something great.
