Tower of Song This two-disc retrospective traces the Canadian bard s musical maturity from poet and novelist who sang a little to multidimensional artist whose oracular vocals and increasingly rich arrangements are every bit as compelling as his verse. Even when Cohen came to prominence through the 1960s songcraft of Suzanne and Bird on a Wire, the folksinger tag never really fit. Later highlights ranging from the deadpan drollery of Tower of Song and Everybody Knows to the apocalyptic anthemry of First We Take Manhattan and Democracy suggest that other labels might be more appropriate: cabaret surrealist, spiritual gadfly, sensual prophet, agent provocateur. Cohen chose the selections, drawing more than half of the 31 tracks from three landmark albums--his 1967 debut Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1988 s I m Your Man, and 1992 s The Future--along with four from 2001 s Ten New Songs. The collection justifies its title as deep as it goes, though it s a shame that Cohen s commercial profile couldn t justify ... | | | Average Customer Rating: (19) Jack Johnson Price: CDN$ 4.89 (31 available)

Constellations For a man who gets his biggest kicks surfing the waves and strumming his guitar on a lonely beach in native Hawaii, singer-songwriter Jack Johnson has carved out quite a remarkable career on the mainland. His 2003 album, On and On, debuted at No. 3 on The Billboard 200 and subsequently went platinum on the back of hit single The Horizon Has Been Defeated. The follow-up, meanwhile, seems destined to shine even brighter. The drifting chords and soft voice are still in place, only now Johnson s instinct for melody has sharpened alongside his ability to self-edit. These small concessions make third album, In Between Dreams, his most conspicuous, particularly on tracks like the three-minute relationship drama, Sitting, Waiting, Wishing, and Breakdown, a song he originally recorded for Handsome Boy Modeling School s White People album remade here to reveal its full stripped-down loveliness. Recorded in the comparatively intimate environs of the University Refectory, Leeds, in February 1970, the two-hour-plus show was heavily truncated and clocked in at a mere 38 minutes upon it s release as an album later the same year. Despite this, the album s six tracks showcased the thermonuclear dynamics that established The Who as the best live rock band in the world. This long overdue deluxe edition features the entire 33 song set, including the bulk of rock opera Tommy, plus full-length versions of previously lopped cuts. Throughout the proceedings, The Who s blitzkrieg barrage is propelled by the octopus limbed Keith Moon-the-loon and John Entwistle s elasticated, DC10-booming bass, topped with Pete Townsend s tumultuous windmilled power chords and Roger Daltrey s howl. Such is the potency of their attack that they even invest those hoary standards Summertime Blues and Shakin Al... #Live rock and roll sounds like THIS. (2004-06-26) I never bought the original ",Live at Leeds,", having for the Who the same sort of love/hate affair I have with the Beatles (this may be the result of being an unabashed Stones fanatic, I don t know). I d look at the songs on it, go, wow, just six, and pass. Boy am I glad I waited. The remakes of records have a disturbing tendency to historical revisionism. Here s an exception. The biggest change history made to the original ",Live at Leeds", was SIMPLY PUTTING THE BEST PARTS OF THE SHOW ON THE RECORD, FINALLY! Only in Dreams Blending the best aspects of pop, punk and grunge, Weezer s eponymous debut came as a much needed bit of relief to the too-serious American indie scene of 1994. Produced (and strongly influenced) by former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek, Weezer blends churning, power-pop guitars with Beach Boys harmonies and the awkward lyrics of singer/songwriter Rivers Cuomo. On standout tracks such as In The Garage and The World Has Turned And Left Me Here, Weezer introduced the wider world to the then-new concept of Geek Rock. However, it was Buddy Holly--and its corresponding Spike Jonze-directed video--that propelled this album into the charts. Unfortunately, this song also branded them as nothing more than another novelty act, an unfair fate for an album--and band-- that s since had so much influence. --Robert Burrow | | | Average Customer Rating: (24) Price: CDN$ 5.00 (8 available)

Go to Sleep Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah Harmer s 2000 debut, You Were Here, was justifiably lauded and it made her a star in her homeland, racking up platinum sales. Four years later she s brought forth an equally engaging set of 11 finely honed songs. After the friendly mid-tempo opener and its tale of roaming the countryside in winter, she fearlessly kicks up the decibel meter with the smartly propulsive Almost, presenting a lustful crush with appropriate passion and the wallop of a rocker. Throughout it all, Harmer has a gifted eye for the small details that give human scale and resilience to the lyrics. The sense of place evoked is unmistakably linked to her home in Ontario s Quaker Valley, and perhaps not surprisingly, All of Our Names was recorded primarily at her rural abode. The album has all the breadth and depth of a work created in a big-city studio, but it also exudes a warmth and intimacy that can be attributed to the care and comfort afforded by the setting. --David Greenberger #A Staple in Anyone s Music Collection (2004-07-01) ",All of Our Names", is a bit slower overall than the last record, but still packs Harmer s tight, creative songwriting. Each song is its own world, filled with Harmer s great use of lyrical metaphors. ",Pendulums", is one of my favorite songs, along with ",Silver Road. ",I was not disappointed with this album at all. I think loyal fans will definitely like this one, and newer fans will be intrigued by Harmer s voice and wonder at how such a goregous album can be made in one s own laundry room. #loverly (2004-06-26) First two songs are especially great. Several others send me away as well. Well worth obtaining, if only to pick your favorites and move on. Some reviews claim that this cd isn t as good as her first, but really, what they aren t seeing is that she has refined her art, and made it something more. It s certainly more mainstream, and that s not supposed to be a bad thing, necessarily, and it s certainly not here. I like her sophomore effort so much mored than her debut. With the first, you tend to think ",diamond in the rough",. With the second, you s... |
