Love Is Everything (Siberry) Was it homesickness that compelled long time Los Angeles resident k. d. lang to fashion her one woman campaign for north of the border nationalism, or just plain good sense? As an organizing tool, all Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen s Bird on a Wire into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn t exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young s Helpless into haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated ... | | | Average Customer Rating: (249) Original Cast Price: CDN$ 11.98 (21 available)

Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire s novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing, Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz s pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste... #Not Quite out-of-the-park, but stilla homerun (2006-12-15) Firs off, it is important to state that I am not, generally speaking, a fan of muiscal theatre. Indeed I would go so far as to say that, for the most part, I activley dislike it. That said, I adored Wicked. I have seen it live twice now, hope to see it at least once more while it plays here in Toronto, and simply cannot get the songs (well, most of them anyway) out of my head. There are two things that stop me rating this a five. First, that it is the original Broadway cast rather than the current touring company as I bel... | | | Average Customer Rating: (22) Celine Dion Price: CDN$ 5.99 (25 available)

Cloches du Hameau It s almost impossible to believe it didn t already exist, but now that it does, you can bet the sure-to-go-platinum These Are Special Times will turn up under many a Christmas tree this year (the perfect gift for the person who has everything?). The prolific princess of pop has thrown together a mixture of contemporary and traditional holiday favorites, bordering on too-cute and kitschy only on the intro to Feliz Navidad. For many, Dion is an acquired taste, but even naysayers may enjoy her rare moments of restraint on a smoky version of Blue Christmas. The Prayer, a duet with Andrea Bocelli, is set to become this season s Time to Say Goodbye, but it will have to battle it out with the R. Kelly duet, I m Your Angel, first. --Rebecca Wallwork #the christmas spirit personified (2005-11-05) this is always one of my top xmas albums,it has a great mix of tracks, new & traditional, classical, pop/rock & ballad, & really captures the essence of the season, it can perhaps sound a little melancholy, but is a great release from the manic christmas music where we re all supposed to be having such a mad, wild, time. for me, this is a true, traditional christmas, warm, loving, sentimental, thoughtful, reflective, magical, filled with hope & enchantment. for the record, my fave is ",the prayer", - this song is amazing, it send... | | | Average Customer Rating: (66) Mariah Carey Price: CDN$ 7.21 (17 available)

Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child She s been hailed for her multi-octave vocal range--a tool that sometimes detracts from her pop recordings, but actually works quite beautifully in the context of this charming holiday collection. Fans will surely approve of Carey s renditions of slinky secular songs like Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) and a nicely subdued All I Want for Christmas Is You. But where she really surprises is in her unadorned delivery of a passel of traditional carols, highlighted by Silent Night (which she sings quietly, avoiding the temptation to wail those high notes) and Jesus, Oh What a Wonderful Child. A must for diehards, and a pleasant surprise for the unconverted. --David Sprague | | | Average Customer Rating: (176) Joni Mitchell Price: CDN$ 8.92 (24 available)

Last Time I Saw Richard Joni Mitchell would go on from this `71 recording to make more popular, more ambitious, and more challenging albums, but she s never made a better one. Working with minimal accompaniment (Stephen Stills and James Taylor are two of the four sidemen), the Canadian thrush summoned an involving song cycle of romance found and lost. Though Blue is an uncommonly intimate representation, it s also astonishingly open and gracious. Songs such as All I Want, Carey, California, and A Case of You work equally well as poetry and pop music. --Steve Stolder #Probably the Greatest Album.. Ever. (2008-07-05) Joni Mitchell sings a lot of jazz and her songs are so often layered with whimsy and flutes and seem quite thick. While I am overall, a fan of Mitchell s repetoire, none of her albums have managed to penetrate my soul like her masterpiece, the omnipresent, beautiful, spectacularly sad, rich, and of course, appropriately titled, Blue . Blue is a staple for so many reasons. It captures a kind of nostalgia that someone who, like myself, is too young to experience the cultural movements in the 1960s such as the move to California and ... #the most addicting album ever (2004-07-15) ",Just before our love got lost you said, I am as constant as a northern star, and I said, constant in the darkness, where is that at?
