Perhaps only the fantasy duo of King Kong and Bambi could be a more bizarre pairing than Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Yet on Raising Sand, their haunting and brilliant collaboration, the Led Zeppelin screamer and Nashville s most hypnotic song whisperer seem made for each other. This, however, is not the howling Plant of Whole Lotta Love, but a far more precise and softer singer than even the one who emerged with Dreamland (2002). No matter that Plant seems so subdued as to be on downers, for that s one of the keys to this most improbable meeting of musical galaxies--almost all of it seems slowed down, out of time, otherworldly, and at times downright David Lynch-ian, the product of an altered consciousness. Yet probably the main reason it all works so well is the choice of producer T Bone Burnette, the third star of the album, who culled mostly lesser-known material from some of the great writers of blues, country, folk, gospel, and R&B, including Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Milt ...

#Hypnotic (2008-08-19) I was hesitant about this purchase but once I listened to it. . WOW!! Very relaxing and the 2 voices were ment to sing together. It s a perfect cd for a romantic night or a diner party. Robert Plant is a man of many talents. . from ROCK GOD OF THE 70 S to a mature and mello Rock God!!!
#GREAT CD (2008-01-22) Being a Zep fan it was hard to imagine how this work would turn out but it is fantastic. It may take a bit to get used to a more mellow Robert Plant but the more you listen the more addictive it becomes. A great addition to any cd collection regardless of your taste in music.
#Superb! (2008-01-08) I recommend this album to all music lovers regardless of your genre leanings. Krauss voice is simply stunning (I cannot think of a female vocalist with a more pure, subtle or beautiful voice) and Plant has finally learned to sing properly!!! Don t get me wrong -- I am a dedicated Zep fan -- but this is the first time I have heard his voice truly shine. Love this album s version of Please Read the Letter and Sister Rosetta gives me goosebumps. Highly, highly recommended. It s too bad the immature and vacuous review by Jean-pierre Falardeau Jeeparoo had to scar t...
#Borefest (2008-01-03) Boring. . . . . Boring. . . . . . . . Why did plant do this I don t know. . . . He must be gettin old. Good CD if you are an insomniac !!! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
#Quite Over-Hyped, But Still Pretty Good! (2007-12-30) This album has received a ton of hype, and in some senses it is warranted. The combination of Plant and Krauss is in itself something of a spectacle that is guaranteed to get attention. But I m struck with the fact that they actually go together pretty well musically! It sounds like they ve been together for a long time. Throughout, this CD is soothing and composed quaintly. The entire thing has a nice, smooth cohesion to it. But yet, the individual tracks are generally not all that impressive on their own. Only 3 tracks real...

#A return to olden days (2008-09-22) I have every CD or record Joan Baez has ever issued. Attended concerts. Just love her. Wasn t wild about her last CD or two. So didn t have super high expectations with this one but was very pleasantly surprised. It s got a very strong religious flavour - sort of black spiritual meets Roman Catholic. And it hearkens back to some of her earliest music. . . before she was protesting and angry. More joyful and content. It had a bit of finding God theme, which might be associated with ageing and mortality. . . Nice CD. A post review edi...

Although he rose from the ranks of journeyman 60s folksingers to become a potent and consistent 70s hit-maker, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot s stock-in-trade was as much hard-eyed, dispassionate observation as it was romance or poetic whimsy. Perhaps that s why his songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis (this sets Early Morning Rain) to Dylan. If there s such a thing as an alpha-male folkie, Lightfoot certainly fits the bill. Spanning the tongue-in-cheek chauvinism of 1965 s For Lovin Me and the cheatin ways of Sundown, to more introspective fare like If You Could Read My Mind and Beautiful, this 20-track collection presents a concise primer on Lightfoot s career and craft. While his career peaked with one of the most unlikely Top Five hits ever, the gloom-laden 1976 narrative The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Lightfoot s production tailed off sharply thereafter, though this anthology s Stay Loose (86) and Restless (93) are testament to his enduring skills as...

#I can t get enough of Gordon and his incredible talent (2005-07-01) This is a wonderful compilation of some of his best-loved songs, and I find it common for me to just play it over and over again,ad nauseum. I was a teenager in the 60 s and didn t really pay much attention to him during those early years, but somehow the truth, magic and wonder of this man s incredible talent grew on me and its clear to see that it just shines through the plethora of artists who have come and gone over the years. His songs such as Stay Loose and Ribbon of Darkness (not on this album) are so power...
#Sad song selection (2004-04-21) I was so diasappointed by the selection of early UA trax on this CD, it now sits in the used CD section of my favorite CD store. What could have been an awesome CD, is only mediocre at best. . . Sorry Thane. Where are his best UA songs, Did She Mention My Name?, I m Not Sayin or Ribbon of Darkness??? Several songs on here are below Lightfoot average -- why Go-Go Round (very amateurish) & Pussywillows (peraps the most boring song ever written). A great opportunity -- lost. . .
#Complete Canadian Class - Terrific (2004-04-03) One of my favourote singers of all time. The is a marvellous collection of classic Lightfoot tracks. All the hits that this very underrated singer-songwriter had, either himself or by others interpretations, are here from ",Early Morning Rain", through ",If You Could Read My Mind", and ",Sundown", on to ",Restless",. OK, there are some obvious omissions which other reviewers have, quite rightly, pointed out. Lightfoot was one of those who had the tag of ",the second Bob Dylan",, which is like ha...

#I could play this from sunrise to ",Sundown",. (2004-03-02) Seems like it would be hard to better ",Gord s Gold",, but this did. This collection is perfect for the average fan. 20 tracks including ",Carefree Highway",, ",If You Could Read My Mind",, ",Beautiful",, and the excellent ",Sundown",. Also here is ",The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald",, which other collections miss. Something about ",Gordon Lightfoot", stood out among the other 70 s singer/songwriters. Be it his looks or voice, he was gentle, yet more mascu...

1. Fields of Gold 2. Wade in the Water 3. Autumn Leaves 4. Wayfaring Stranger 5. Songbird 6. Time Is a Healer 7. I Know You By Heart 8. People Get Ready 9. Oh, Had I a Golden Thread 10. Over the Rainbow

Songbird cherry-picks tracks from the three locally released albums of Eva Cassidy, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals went virtually unheard outside her native Washington, D.C., during her short 33 years with us. Lost to melanoma in 1996, Cassidy sang with an unaffected purity and an astonishing ability to make both classic and contemporary songs sound like they were written just for her. Sting s Fields Of Gold finally lives up to its title through the alchemy of Cassidy s transcendent rendition, while other tracks on this anthology showcase her ease in the realms of pop (Christine McVie s Songbird), soul (People Get Ready), gospel (Wade On The Water) and traditional standards (Autumn Leaves and Over The Rainbow). Framed by understated jazz and pop arrangements, Cassidy s clear, soulful voice and exquisite phrasing make her that rarest of vocalists whose interpretations are a complement to any song. A fine introduction to a true talent. --Billy Grenier

#This one s a perfect ten (2004-07-20) I believe I m writing this more for myself than for readers who can look at five hundred previous reviews. I was so moved by Eva Cassidy s songs that I want to share my thoughts with everyone. I recieved a copy of Songbird from my sister in law. I rarely prefer a second version of a familiar song so I was hesitant to even listen to this CD which included some old favorites. Then I had to take a long drive and had nothing new to listen to, so I listened to Eva. I was stunned. The music really got to me and I had not seen her or heard Eva...
#Perfect (2004-06-24) Just listened to ",Over the Rainbow", again. Wow. That s just about as well as a mortal can do it.
#6 stars out of 5..... (2004-06-10) The beautiful, irreplaceable Eva Cassidy died at the young age of 33, leaving behind a treasury of beautiful and bluesy songs she reinvented with her beautiful voice, guided by an intuitive grace. SONGBIRD is like no album I have ever heard. It has a quiet strength, not unlike Eva herself, that sets it apart from all folk, jazz, blues and pop albums. The first cut, ",Fields of Gold,", was made completely unrecognizable from Sting s original. The words took on a different meaning for me, and Eva s melancholy voice made me think of those...
#Sometimes, I m just too stubborn... (2004-05-31) I didn t buy this, originally, because I thought it maudlin to reissue Eva s songs after her death. . . newly discovered material yes, but why songs she had already released? Boy, was I ever wrong! After wearing out two discs of ",Live at Blues Alley",, I went back in time to purchase ",The Other Side", -- a jazz/blues/funk collaboration between the incredible Eva Cassidy and the funky Chuck Brown. Most fans of Eva have gone back to Blues Alley, where she originated ",Autumn Leaves", and ",Fields of Gold&quo...
#Absolutely Beautiful! (2004-05-24) By chance I came across this CD and listened to a few tracks and decided to get it. It s a wonder how you can come across something so amazing, like finding a diamond in the rough. My favorite has to be ",Somewhere over the Rainbow",, followed closely by ",Wade in the Water. ", Her voice makes you feel like a warm autumn day, like stepping into the wind and kissing the breeze. I hope I got it right.

#Eva does it again.... (2008-10-17) I didn t think I d ever hear another new CD from Eva Cassidy. I guess there was some material that had not been released previously that made it to this disc. It is a very diverse collection of songs but that shouldn t put anyone off. Eva s warm and soaring voice is just as fantastic here as it is on all of the previously released material. A must for fans and highly recommended for those who have yet to hear her sing.
