#Mood music at its best, with stellar musical talent (2008-11-16) I m partial to the Southern jams and uptempo stuff that kicked off our relationship. These guys were breath of fresh air pickled with twang and moonshine when they launched Holy Roller Novocaine. This was a great start. These boys were not content to rest idle on the twang groove. . . they step to new styles with each new album, and they do so with unmatched competence. Now - I m not a fan loyal to a specific sound, I m loyal to the talent and to the imagination they bring to the sounds they choose to explore. I...
#Night Music (2008-10-30) Great album! For sure more slow jams than the last albums, but the don t call it Only By the Night for no good reason. The quality of the sound is very good. Worth checking out.
#Just Ok (2008-10-01) Not a bad album, but pails in comparision to their earlier albums. Good if you dig slow jams.
#Nickeleon (2008-09-25) Wow. . . they sure embraced their inner Nickeleon on this album. Sex On Fire is one of the dumbest songs ever written, with a pointless video to match, and their utterly predictable formula for the record shows itself in spades with Use Somebody and Be Somebody. It s Nickelback for indie kids. Sure, their sound has changed over time, but they aren t getting any better, just different. That means they don t have a sound of their own. They re a patchwork of dick and whore anecdotes and stage posturing. At least Mötley Crüe and KISS were honest about the...

#fleet foxes deliver (2008-07-26) Fleet Foxes may have a firm grasp on rock and folk history, but they never play to their record collection. Rather than revive a particular scene or re-create a lost sound, the Seattle quintet cherrypick their ideas from a broad spectrum of styles, pulling in Appalachian folk, classic rock, AM country, and SoCal pop to create a personal synthesis of the music of their peers, their parents, and even their grandparents. The band didn t leave town to record Fleet Foxes, yet it sounds like it could have been recorded anywhere in the United States-- Austin,...
#Hold me dear, into the night (2008-06-04) The Fleet Foxes are a rock band that sounds like no other -- imagine a pastoral choir overwhelming a sweeping folk-rock band, in the middle of a sunlit forest in the spring. That s about the sound of the Fleet Foxes self-titled debut album -- it s a stream of lush, jangly folk pop, edged with a touch of baroque and country-rock. While their Sun Giant EP was an excellent introduction, it s nothing compared to the rough-edged grandeur of the full-length album, with its glorious instrumentation and vivid lyricism. The only really offputting part...

Oracular Spectacular s intriguing cover image features two members of what looks to be the Lost Tribe of Androgynously Handsome Nu-Rave Hippie Natives from Thunderdome. The boys on the cover are MGMT, the highly talented, multi-instrumentalist duo of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden. Bowie, Muse, Pulp, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Daft Punk, and other major players in the canon of postmodern pomp-pop clearly loom large in MGMT s universe. The group s lyrics play figurative dress-up, too, as when, on Time to Pretend, the pair imagine that they re already rich and famous. But like the worst of Bowie (Tin Machine, anyone?), these lyrics and music unfortunately ring false, not unreal, per se, but as if not enough effort were put into the endeavor. Stylistically divergent songs like The Handshake, Youth, Electric Feel, and Weekend Wars have a lot going for them, and the album is ultimately a promising debut. It just happens to sound like a wayward mix tape. Hopefully, successive albums will ...

#A FRESHLY AWESOME SOUND (2008-07-12) This album has a freshly awesome sound, its got electric beats mixed with rock and spacey melodies. Super Fresh sound! And unlike anything I have recently heard. I highly recommend it for people who think its about time we had a musical/spiritual/natural re-evolution.
#Spectacular Oracular (2008-06-26) Putting a label on the debut album by MGMT is a toughie. They re sort of a synth-psychedelic-space-indie-noisepop band. And they break an awful lot of rules in their debut album Oracular Spectacular, a vibrant, colorful little album that sounds like a cascade of summer flowers. They have a few wrinkles yet to iron out, but their music has a unique and striking sound, and they obviously know how to craft solid pop music with a foot-tapping beat, and a slightly eerie sound. It opens with squeaks, bubbling noises, and finally with a slow-building elect...
