While enjoying your Fawlty Towers holiday, be sure to extend your stay by visiting the deluxe extra features. New to this set are entertaining commentaries by John Cleese, who provides illuminating insights into how these lovely little farces were constructed. He expresses genuine affection for the cast and guest stars, is quick to praise exquisite bits of comic business (This is funnier than I remember), and is not shy about criticizing his own performance (I don t think I acted this right). Also new to this set are newly filmed interviews with Cleese, Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs, and Connie Booth, who offers some great anecdotes about collaborating with her then-husband Cleese and how some memorable gags were created. Donald Sinclair, the real-life rude hotelier who inspired the character of Basil Fawlty, is given his due, but be forewarned you will hear several versions of the Eric Idle ticking suitcase story. Also appearing are notable guest stars, including Bernard Cribbins (The...

#We re stuck with it! (2010-05-16) Nothing really needs to be said about this classic British sitcom, except that it contains some of the most brilliant, most hilarious, and most humiliatingly ghastly moments in the entire history of television. And Fawlty Towers Complete Collection brings together the entire series in all its embarrassing avalanchal glory. It s one of those universally funny TV shows, all about the undignified exploits of a perpetually hostile, repressed and tetchy hotel manager, and the more competant staff who try to keep thngs sane, written with demented zeal (Tha...
#Best version yet (2010-01-04) Is this the second or third time s it s been remastered for DVD? I ve been buying this since VHS days and it s never looked better. Cleese s commentary tracks are like listening to a clinic on the subject of farce (except way more entertaining than that sounds). Since this will never come out on Blu-ray it s the best it will ever be.

Basil Fawlty, as created and performed by John Cleese, is the rudest, most boorish, most hilariously obnoxious man on the face of the planet. What a natural for a TV sitcom! His screen wife, Sybil (Prunella Scales), put it best in the episode The Psychiatrist: You re either crawling all over them, licking their boots, or spitting poison at them like some Benzedrine puff adder. He mockingly replies, Just trying to enjoy myself, dear. With his gangly frame and contortionist abilities, Cleese brilliantly punctuates Basil s outrageous faux pas with absurd gymnastics and turns Three Stooges-style pokes and kicks into a slapstick ballet. Scales s Sybil is the genial but obliviously chatty voice of reason and Andrew Sachs mangles the English language as the Spanish bellhop Manuel, whose struggles with simple directions results in comic lunacy reminiscent of Robert Benigni. After a six-episode run in 1975, Cleese and cowriter and costar Connie Booth (who plays Polly, the maid all...

#Fawlty Towers (2010-01-24) I have been a big fan of John Cleese ever since this series came out some 35 years ago. There was only 12 episodes made and each one of them is hilarious. Thank you very much Amazon, I am so glad I purchased this series from you. I will charish this for a long time.
#Very good english comedy (2010-01-16) We bought this for over the christmas period for family entertainment. Excellent. Everyone was laughing and enjoying it I had forgotten how good it was. It was well worth every penny and shall be enjoyed for a long time to come. One of the best british comedies.
#Fawlty Towers (2009-12-28) So great and so very funny. Actually better than watching the originals as technology has made a clearer picture and sound. If you were a Fawlty Towers fan would recommend you purchase it. Many days and nights of continuous laughs and you can watch as many or as little as you want. Arrived very quickly and great value for the money.
#Don t mention the war (2009-03-31) This series, written by John Cleese and, his then wife, Connie Booth is based on John s actual experiences at a hotel when he was doing some location work for Monty Python. With only 12 episodes, this series packs more comedy gold than five seasons of most US sitcoms. These episodes demonstrate how great writing and a solid cast can deliver one of the best TV series ever. The shows revolve around Basil Fawlty, a hotelier who is not satisfied with the calibre of guests or staff at his establishment and who tries, unsuccessfully, to control his env...
#Fawlty Towers (2009-02-17) Not to bad for a light entertainment with the British sense of Humor. Comparing it to `Keeping Up Appearances is pushing the envelope a little. The overall performance is not too bad but lacks the spark of similar British endeavours. The prize is right and for it well worth to own.

#Round 2 of a delightfully catty social war (2002-03-02) (I shall take for granted that you are already familiar with season 1. This series is linear and MUST be watched in order for full enjoyment)This is not so much a sequel as a continuation of the adventures of everyone s favorite social climbers. Series 1 ended with a victory for Mapp and Lucia vowing revenge and series 2 begins with Mapp (now Mrs. Mapp-Flynt) returning from her honeymoon. Almost instantly, she and Lucia are back at each other s throats. In this series, politics are added to the mix with both Mapp and Lucia vy...
#Mapp and Lucia VOL 2 (2002-02-12) Not up to the quality of the first series (5 Stars). Storyline, acting and even makeup are all a little off when compared to the superb first set. Perhaps the gap of several years between shooting contributed to this. I can not see why the other customer reviews rate this series over the first set, which was rich with delightful characters and situations set against a lush English seaside background. Nonetheless, set 2 is a ",keeper",, and a companion well worth having.
#Does it really really have to end? (2001-04-26) If possible, the second series of Mapp and Lucia is even better than its predecessor. The success of the first seems to have given confidence to the filmmakers - there is a greater attention to the formal properties of the narrative - a more inventive use of music to comment on or undermine character and situation, a more meaningful use of visual composition. This, allied to the previously exquisite stylisation (the artificial sets in real locations, the mannered acting, the eye-popping costumes, the stacatto dialogue, the physical ex...
#Wonderful video but a strange ending (2000-04-12) These episodes are almost better than the first series with the exception of the ending where Lucia berates the local populace outside the church - didn t seem in keeping with the character IMHO. However the performances are superb and the production values (especially the costumes) are tremendous. BTW for UK viewers the tapes are now available in VHS PAL format - and cheaper than the US too!
#Why can t you get these wonderful videos in the UK? (1999-01-11) A wondeful successor to the first series of Mapp & Lucia, dramatising the later Mapp & Lucia books. As with the first series, the cast could not be bettered and the various comic episodes of rivalry between Tilling s two grande dames are brilliantly realised. The ceremony of the dedication of the organ and the local election are particular favourites. I just don t know why we can t get these in the UK and have to invest in NTSC video players. . .

#one of the most underappreciated movies ever! (2009-08-30) I had never seen or heard of this low-key delightful treasure until I came across it in VHS in our local library almost 20 years ago. Charles Laughton is superb as a widower with three daughters. The story is set in the north of England before the first World War. Unmarried women past a certain age were to be pitied, drinking (especially to excess) was shameful, girls expected their fathers to increase their chances of marriage by providing large dowries. The oldest daughter, Maggie, splendidly played by Brenda de Banzie (y...
#Excellent movie... (2009-03-24) If you re a fan of this era of movies and actors(actresses), this is one of the best. Even my young son (19 years old) said it held his attention and was not as bad as I thought it would be . This is high praise coming from him. As for myself,I thought it was great and highly recommend it.

Sophisticated to a point, this well-executed wolf-man tale works due to its clever setting and enormous star power. We all know Jack Nicholson can go nuts, but the script makes his character aware of his changes, sometimes for the better, early on. The setting, a publishing house in the middle of a takeover, gives the characters dramatic life before the horror elements kicks in. A senior editor about to get the boot, Nicholson s character becomes a new man after being bitten by a wolf. He takes on challenges at work, lives a more robust life, and attracts a new love. But will his newfound energy consume him? Director Mike Nichols keeps the action alive in the first half, but the film peters out at the end with cheap theatrics and the overuse of slow motion. Michelle Pfeiffer has little to do as simply the love interest with a grittier than average personality. Better is James Spader as a smarmy colleague. Nicholson is in fine form, relying on his keen gift to spark interest (a twitch o...

#TOP DRAWER WEREWOLF FILM... (2006-12-13) This is a thinking person s werewolf movie. Well directed by Mike Nichols, it features a stellar cast who give excellent performances. Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Plummer, James Spader, Kate Nelligan, and David Hyde Pierce all contribute to the successful execution of this sophisticated and subtle horror film. As an added bonus, those of you who are devotees of the TV series, Friends, should look for David Schwimmer s cameo appearance in the film. Jack Nicholson plays a middle aged, married, senior book editor for a publis...
#Hair club for men (2006-07-02) Will Randall (Jack Nicholson) has made it to the top of his publishing career. With no where to go he is sure to be a victim of the latest merger. He has the support of close friends and loyal clients, however that is not enough for him to see any way out but down or out. Little does he know that he is being helped out. One night driving on a dark snowy road in Wisconsin he encounters and collides with a wolf. Upon investigation of the situation he is nipped. Turns out this could be the best/worst that that could happen. Now he finds the physical ...

#Intelligent horror film/character study (2003-10-18) This is an interesting film, because it s partly a character study of a tired, middle aged publisher and partly a horror film about werewolves. Jack Nicholson plays a publisher about to lose his job to his friend and protege, who also happens to be sleeping with his wife. He seems too worn out to put up much of a fight, until he is bitten by a dying wolf, and begins to feel as if he has taken on its spirit. He also falls for the incredibly beautiful daughter of his boss (Michelle Pfeiffer). This movie has top notch acting, an in...
