#Happy to have an alternative to Crying! (2008-05-20) I bought this book as well as the Ferber Method book. I wanted to be well researched. What I loved about this book was the compassionate side. It is written from a mother s perspective rather than a science perspective. It doesn t promise fast results, but give practical tips to the frustrated mother. After 11 days my daughter was sleeping from about 8pm at night until 8am the next morning and only waking at 1am to nurse. It also turned me on to attachment parenting, to which I also bought (and reviewed on this site) Dr. Sears...
#some good ideas (2008-01-29) I thought this book was very practical and had some usefull ideas. My 10 month old is still not sleeping through the night but I think she is improving. The thing I did not like was the fact that some of her ideas did not work for us and it doesn t have any advice if they dont work except to keep trying them. Overall a good book and would recommend it to others.
#Excellent, long-term results (2008-01-22) I first used the ideas from this book with my daughter, who has special needs. The moment I picked up the book, it made so much sense to me--to change a habit carefully, step by step, rather than trying to quit what we d been doing since birth cold turkey. It took several months of patient work, but it was worth it. Every book I read tells me that children with her needs generally sleep poorly, but my daughter sleeps all night, every night. She is well-rested and that makes her better able to face her challenges and learn and grow. S...
#Finally - A Book with all the Answers! (2007-09-03) What a fantastic book this is! I have read 2 other baby sleep books but this is the one. Many books just talk about theories and vague ideas. Elizabeth Pantley actually gives you practical advice that you can use and alter to your own needs! I was about at my wits end with our 15 month old son when I came across the NO CRY METHOD. I was so worn down and was always worrying about how long it would take to put him down at night. Elizabeth gives some wonderful advice on how to get through that while working through the METHOD. She g...
#A dissenting view (2007-06-25) First, I m glad that many people have had success with Elizabeth s methods. We did not, in fact we gave up after about 10 weeks. It has been a long two years but our daughter generally sleeps through the night now. Why the low review? I just found the book to be a collection of pretty photos and feel good stories. I suppose she needed them to convince all of us to keep doing this method for weeks on end. I would have preffered a short and to the point style (call it sleep deprivation lack of ability to focus on everybody else s successes). By the...

#A MUST for parents (2006-12-05) I first read this book in college, and found that the principles it discusses work just as well with adults as it does with children. Portions of the book have given me great success in dealing with difficult coworkers. It helped me to overcome some problematic situations with my wife as well.
#A terrific book (2004-06-08) I feel this should be required reading for parents (and people in general). Easy to read. Great concepts. Great examples. And just as importantly, the tone is very respectful of the parents (so many of the other books on this topic tend to talk to parents like they don t get it. . . ). I recommend it heartily.
#Talking To Feelings With Just the Right Words...WORKS! (2004-03-18) Although this best selling book was originally written more than 20 years ago, I find the advice and specific suggestions extremely on target in 2004. The main strategy that has made such a positive difference in my life is to acknowlege my child s feelings before I give the direction for compliance. Most of the time, I do try to give well-meaning, honest (not always calm) responses to my 3-year-old that unfortunately sometimes escalate into a raging tantrum or no win power struggle such as in the following example a...
#If you only read one parenting book... (2004-03-08) . . . make it this one. Effective communication is the foundation of good parenting. This book has practical, easy-to-implement techniques to improve your communication with your kids. The format is such that busy parents can pick it up and read briefly, yet still come away with a couple useful ideas to put into play right away. It is written in themed sections and there are cartoon scenarios to illustrate exchanges between parents and kids. The cartoons show things going poorly and then a better way to approach the exchange...
#The Communication Bible (2003-12-29) As a parent of 3 toddlers, I ve read lots and this is by far the most useful, intelligent and common sense approach to communicating with anyone. If you read one book on parenting, this is it. It changed our lives. By practicing the concepts in this book, you will raise children that are self confident, curious and not afraid to communicate their feelings. Childrend want to tell you how they feel, the trick is learning how to respond. Now, of course, I watch our friends make far-reaching mistakes with their kids. . . but that s another boo...

#Why Good Writing Matters (2008-07-16) I attended a full day presentation by Gordon Neufeld where he crammed the practical information into the last half hour. I purchased the book hoping to review his ideas at a more leisurely pace. The book was written like a university lecture. And like the presentation the practical information was crammed to the back of the book-- this is where you should start your reading. While I do not agree with everything he writes he has some good ideas.
#A Timely Message (2008-04-07) Gordon Neufeld, a prominent Canadian child psychologist, has written a very timely and informative book on why and how parents should attempt to stay connected with their children right into adulthood. He believes many children have become socially endangered by the questionable relationships they foster with their peers at the expense of their parents. According to Neufeld, it is absurd to think that an immature teenager can derive personal security from fostering friendships with other equally immature peers. Hence, making friends with one s peers is ...
#Amazing Thought Provoking Book (2008-04-07) Last summer I picked up Hold On To Your Kids. Quite honestly, it has taken me a while to get through it (finally did today!). Part One The Phenomenon of Peer Orientation was fascinating. Part Two Sabotaged: How Peer Orientation Undermines Parenting scared the crap out of me. Part Three Stuck in Immaturity: How Peer Orientation Stunts Healthy Development was a tough read as Neufeld regurgitated the same points from part one & two with just a slightly different theme, though I still highly recommend reading this part. Part Four How to Hold...
#Great message, BUT.... (2007-04-16) I purchased this book after attending a 2 hour lecture by Mr. Neufeld which was a huge eye opener and was profound enough to change how I parent. This book has an impactful message, focusing on cultivating a connected relationship with your child and insight into the negative impact that occurs when children become more connected to their peers than their parents. Read all the 5 star reviews to find out about the good side of this book BUT- here is the downside- as much as I appreciated the message, this book is not an easy read and I am a true ...
#Hold on to Your Kids (2005-08-28) Top notch! If you have ever wondered why new concepts in parenting seem wrong to you (time-outs, peer pressure, day un care etc) this book is for you. It might shake the foundations upon which you have based your ideas but it will also give you pause and give you confidence in things you felt were wrong and right about child rearing. Not a how to book (imagine our parents or grandparents needing such a thing)

#Good book for establishing sleep routine (2008-05-08) If you follow a structured routine, you will solve all your baby problems is the idea of this book. The routine explained in the book is called E. A. S. Y. (Eating, Activity, Sleeping, You). The author explains that the times of the individual elements of the routine will vary according to the baby, but every baby should have a routine if you want to have a life. Eating, Activity, Sleeping and Making Time for yourself are very well explained in the book in an easy-to-read way. If you are breastfeeding, you may not feel any su...
#Quite simply: the BEST and ONLY baby care book for any new parent! (2008-04-19) This book has given me confidence in my mothering, and provides the skills and tools necessary to learn to understand your newborn and young toddler. I often think it must be so frustrating for babies to try and communicate their needs to us when they cannot yet speak. This book teaches how you can decipher your babies needs and respond accordingly. I believe this has helped transform my child from a frustrated and high maintenance newborn, to a very happy, gentle, kind, independent, well developed and m...
#The Baby Whisperer is Golden!!!! (2008-03-12) I am so glad I bought this book. My son was 11 wks old when I got it. I started him on the routine with great results. He now sleeps and naps with ease. If I have a second baby it will be on the routine from day one!!!! By having him on a routine it made it easier to interpret his needs resulting in a happier baby and making my life easier too!!!! A very caring, common sense, doable approach to child raising.
#Not the best book for co-sleeping parents ! (2008-01-27) I own this book and every time I pick it up and read it I get annoyed. The tone is pretty condescending with terms such as accidental parenting. When I tried to incorporate Hogg s schedules into my routine, I ended up feeling like a failure, and I messed myself and baby up for the day by trying to force everything into a tidy package. I didn t find her advice on sleep helpful at all but I do, somewhat, appreciate her E. A. S. Y. (eat, activity, sleep, your time) philosphy as a guideline for establishing a routine with bab...
#A Godsend! (2007-12-30) Ever wish babies came with a manual? This book IS that manual! Tracy has worked with thousands of babies, and she has a wonderful gift: she understands them. In this book, she takes you by the hand and guides you through issues such as feeding, sleeping, behavior, and much more. Her methods are extremely gentle and respectful of the baby/child. For example, she doesn t believe in letting babies cry it out. She encourages other more gentle methods to help babies learn to go to sleep on their own. Her methods have worked wonders for us and many other parents ...
