#Heaven Sent (2008-09-18) This book gives parents an understanding of how sleep happens, sleep patterns and the tools to instill great sleep habits in our kids. It was an eye opener and a godsend. We went from having a baby everyone thought was characteristically wakeful and uninterested in his surroundings to a happily well rested baby that loves to interact w his environment. Must read for new parents.
#not great (2008-02-19) I didn t like this book too much. I felt that most of the suggestions were a bit harsh and contradictory. I have several *sleep solutions* books and this is definately my least favorite. Was also really really long!
#Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child (2006-01-20) I consider this book to be the bible for sleep-deprived parents. It gives you all the background info you need to understand children',s sleep problems and how to fix them. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone with a child who is not sleeping well. However, be prepared for a long, cumbersome read. Like many other reviewers have stated, this book needs some good editing. It is difficult to understand in parts, contradictory at times, and just an overall boring read! Difficult to get through the whole thing when you',r...
#Great Book, Lousy Organization (2005-09-29) I got this book when I was pregnant, and read it with interest. Now that the little one is here and is three months old I am just starting to employ the book s techniques. It really works and has given me the confidence to tackle the sleep problems my daughter has been facing and also just to feel like what we were doing when our daughter was younger to get her to sleep wasn t causing any future problems (for example, Weisbluth says that prior to thre months using a swing is okay, he also is okay with the family bed). Having also read ...
#Healthy Sleep habits, Happy Child (2005-07-29) Fabulous! The first six months of my daughter s life were a sleepless hell. Someone recommended this book to me and now I give it to everyone. A sound grounding in sleep biology and a variety of methods to suit different parenting philosophies and tolerances for crying. I don t follow the ultra early bedtime but keep a schedule and bask in the compliments for the baby s sunny disposition (meaning, now that she is well-rested). I struggled miserably with Attachment parenting methods, this was the remedy.

#A Clear, Sensible Philosophy for Setting Limits that WORKS! (2004-11-28) As a kindergarten teacher as well as a parent of strong-willed 5-year-old twin boys, I too often found myself yelling louder, reminding more often and searching for stricter punishments to get the children to cooperate. . . Nothing was working! I needed a new approach. . . and Dr. MacKenzie has given me the understanding and the tools to set limits effectively without losing my sanity. I learned how I was part of the dance of non-compliance and I realized that I would have to change my behavior first before I go...
#Finally, some help!! This book is a blessing! (2004-06-14) I was skeptical, at first, that a book could help me with my out-of-control, 4 year old son. He s an extremely strong-willed boy that had been having screaming, throwing, hitting tantrums since he was 19 monthes old. Some days we d lose count of how many he had! We tried EVERYTHING from time-outs to spanking and were at our wits end with how to help him, and ourselves. After my husband and I read this book back in December, we were better able to understand my son s temperment and our own. The practical, straight forward ap...
#I recommend this book to all parents (2004-05-07) This is not rocket science, but really practical, basic information about your child s temperment, your discipline style, and how to adjust the latter to work well with the former. I found it VERY useful. My son is definitely strong-willed, and adopting the methods in this book has made my child more responsive to my requests and has made me far more relaxed about parenting and discipline. This book is useful even if your child is not intensely strong-willed - the book teaches good discipline techniques which apply regardless of your...
#Your kids can mind!! WOW! (2004-03-24) This book showed me that the things I were asking of my kids I never meant to inforce. I always wanted to be a nice mother and talk it out and our kids need us to help them learn and setting limits is what life is all about. If you kids has tantrums or is unruly then buy this book. I have read several on this issue and this is the best. I have three boys with ADD and this is a great parenting tool.
#Easy and effective (2004-02-16) This book was very easy to read and understand and the techniques are actually very simple and easy to implement. We got immediate results with our 3 year old daughter, it was really amazing. I have read other similiar books, but found this one to be the most clear and concise and easy to follow.

#Finally, some worthwhile advice (2007-10-04) For the past 3 years, I ve read countless books and listened to healthcare professionals that told me to let my daughter cry it out , even to leave her lying in her own vomit, to push independance. Well, that probably is fine for a lot of children, but for spirited children , it s a different story. Until I read this book, I always felt like I was spoiling my child and was just being a sucker for giving in all the time. If you have a child that is spirited (intense, sensitive), this is a book you must read. If your child also has d...
#a parenting book to read and reread (2007-08-14) I think this book is really balanced. It talks about some of the emotional challenge that parents of difficult-to-parent children face. It talks about adjusting your parenting style to accommodate the child s needs while still putting limits. It talks about helping teach your child to fit into the world (for example, through asking for what they need rather than becoming upset or learning how to approach groups of other children quietly rather than just barging in). This is a book that helps me to look more closely at what is actuall...

Though not for the impatient, What s Going on in There? How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life will undoubtedly make you a better parent. It is thick, detailed, and scientific. But it is also accessible to parents who have the time and patience to immerse themselves in the latest research on brain development. And for those who do, the rewards can be great. You ll understand the inner workings of the brain like never before. You ll learn the latest thinking on the nature vs. nurture question. You ll gain invaluable insights into the evolution of the senses, motor skills, social and emotional growth, memory, language, and intelligence. But most importantly, you ll understand--maybe for the first time--exactly how great your contribution as a parent can be to the development of your young child s brain. Written by Lise Eliot, Ph.D., a neurobiologist and mother of three, What s Going on in There? is an immensely intelligent labor of love. It is based on the author...

#The Best Parenting Book (2004-05-20) This book is for the parent who wants to know all the ",Whys. ", I have identical twins, so it is very interesting to me to see why their personalities might be different. Identical twins are used in many experiments, so I found this book especially interesting. My mother-in-law is also a pschologist and did many ",experiements", with my husband (wish they had video cameras back then -- would have been neat to see). :) My husband and I have always been fascinated with child development since our children were born. This ans...
#Absolutely Excellent, A MUST Read (2004-05-06) If you are pregnant or thinking about starting a family I definitely recommend that you buy What s Going on in There? by Lise Eliot. This book is very informative and should be eccential to your prenatal (and even post-natal) reading. Eliot ia a neurobiologist and a mother of three, so not only does she provide more than enough scientific information but she supplies plenty of personal anecdotes involing her children. Unlike most books of this sort that divide the book into ages (0-3 months), Eliot divides her book into developmental s...
#Great book for a parent interested in baby s mind & brain (2004-04-07) I really enjoyed this book. It s well written, informative, and downright interesting. Much of the information is presented in the form of results of studies, not just rules of thumb. For example, the first chapter has useful details about prenatal influences on the brain. There s a summary of research results on how caffeine affects development, and similar sections for alchohol, aspartame, MSG, and other (harmless and not-so-harmless) things that parents-to-be often worry about. Then there s a fascinating ...
#the only parenting book I ve used (2004-01-30) I ve browsed through other parenting books written by parenting experts, but a quick glance always let me know that their claims were dubious and didn t pertain to all the different kinds of children out there. This book does not try to tell you how to act as a parent, instead it tells you what is physiologically going on inside their bodies and brains so that you can figure it out for yourself. For example, when my son was around 1 1/2 I recognized that he was going through a verbal growth phenomenon (that every child experiences) refer...
#Scientific and Easy to Read (2004-01-10) Even with a 9 month old this book was a breeze to read, but not because it lacks in substance. Lise Eliot does a fantastic job of explaining the cognitive development of children without sounding like an article in a scientific journal. Her conversational tone makes her detailed descriptions of brain development fascinating to read. So far this has been my favorite book on child development.

#A must have for any parent!!! (2006-02-18) This book was excellent and informative! As the mother of a preemie, I especially enjoyed reading the section on the low birthweight baby. I loved reading about different milestones that a baby may (or may not) be reaching each month. This book answered so many of my questions, and I would recommend it to any new parent!!
#Great ",Quick", Reference (2005-11-09) I believe this book was fabulous for a quick reference guide. I found it very informative on certain issues such as illness, or rashes etc. Instead of having to call the pediatrician with every little occurance, this book was a great look up reference. Like all books on the market, everyone will tell you what you ",should or should not", do with your new child, but as every experienced parent will tell you -- do what works for you and your baby. I am not pushing this book for any of the parenting issues, I would recommend...
#good reference but major flaws (2004-06-30) This is a good parenting book to have in your library but it should definitely not be the only one. All parenting books have their own bias about co-sleeping and breastfeeding and this one was definitely biased against co-sleeping at all and breastfeeding after the 9th month or so. When I first brought my baby home from the hospital, the only way she would get a decent night s sleep is to sleep with us. Otherwise she cried and fussed the entire night. After two months she was ready to sleep in a cradle but initially we had to adjust ou...
#you get what you expect! (2004-06-25) This is THE book you want to read if you re a first time parent and don t have much experience with babies. You re given very practical explanations on how to deal with your newborn and it helps to solve all the simple troubles you go through everyday, from treating fever and skin rashes to deciding which toy to buy. It is very helpful up to 7/8 months of age of your child, then it becomes less accurate.
#There are much better books out there! (2004-05-26) I bought this book as a resource for my first child. Although it has some useful information, it is very ",middle of the road", and I felt it didn t go in depth enough with research and information I felt to be important. One *huge* area that is lacking is the breastfeeding information. They do not adequately explain the differences between breastfeeding and formula, and recommend weaning a child at 9mo. The AAP recomments nursing for *at least* a year, and the WHO (World Health Organization) recommends at least 2 years...
