#What an incredible book (2007-10-30) Once you start reading it, you won t be able to set it down. I even got yelled at by my boss for reading the book on company time. I ve read it 4 times and each time is like the first time. There is alot of information to process so get ready be blown away. It s awsome. Also, if you missed reading Tino Georgiou s masterpiece--The Fates, go and read it.
#Reflective, yet limited (2004-07-08) Thoreau was a reflective man. He asked pertinent questions, but just didn t go far enough in his search. As a pagan, he was unaware of the realities of Jesus Christ. In spite of his limited vision, he had some profound observations at times. One of my favorites is:",If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away. It is not important that he should mature as soon as an apple-tree or an oak. Should he turn his spring...
#Incredible! (2003-11-22) I had not read this growing up but wish I had. This is such a wonderful book. There are not many pictures in here - just a hand drawn map in one part of the book. Its excerpts from Thoreau s journal over the two year period when he lived on Walden s pond. He did not live like a recluse (he went in to Concord almost every day) so its not a book about living alone per se. Its more about reflecting on life, considering why one ",is", and recognizing the beauty and mystery of nature around us every day, everywhere. Thoreau talks of regular daily ...
#Just a man trying to shift for himself. (2003-09-14) Thoreau went into the Concord woods to live deliberately and to try to approach in practice his excellent motto--multum in parvo--much in little. Setting off to transact some business as simply as possible, Thoreau began his famous experiment a happy man. Importantly, he concluded it 26 months later in the same convivial state. After proving to himself it could be done, he saw no point in continuing his experiment in such extreme fashion, becoming once again a sojourner in civilized life. Thoreau was certainly not alone in the wo...
#I have travelled a good deal in Concord (2003-08-13) The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. Thoreau spent 26 months hermitage at Walden Pond to face what is essential and shed the rest. Starting with Economy then on to Where I lived and What For and Reading, Sounds, Solitude, Visitors, the Pond, Baker Farm, Higher Laws, Brute Neighbors, House Warming, and on through to Spring. Sounds is one of my favorite chapters. He tells of the sounds he can hear as he sits silently listening. He sets his furniture out of doors and watches the sun beam down. He hears the railroad whi...

#An Important Book for Everyone (2007-12-11) This book should be read by everyone. As I spend allot of time in the wilderness I read this book as it was recommended to me by a friend. I am happy I did. Having spent many days, weeks and months of my life in the bush I ve seen and heard horror stories of when people allow themselves to get into dangerous situations. This book will give an understanding of why even experienced people get into trouble and often times it is their previous experience that causes the catastrophe. Deep Survival gives the reader the information necessary to loo...
#Innovative but difficult to digest (2006-08-06) This book is filled with a canyon full of useful knowledge and perspectives but the book loses its direction and doesn t stay grounded in practical thinking. There are some interesting concepts that haven t been presented commonly and might be even quite groundbreaking however the rambling tone of the book makes it all difficilt to digest.
#The Most Important Book You Will Ever Read (2004-05-31) As a person who spent 23 years in the military and many days in dangerous environments, I have to say, you must read this book slowly and memorize the lessons. Whether you are a city person or a country person, this book contains information you may need in an instant. This book explains many of the lessons I learned thought the great college of hard knocks. Had I read this book I would have been so much better prepared to face the many of the challenges I have survived. I made many decisions that lead to my survival. This bo...
#Disappointing (2004-04-30) I was very excited when I first started reading this book because the concept is so promising. I was expecting story after story of outdoor adventures gone bad along with an analysis of why the people did (or didn t) survive. Whatever this book is, it definitely isn t that. I gave up on this book after four chapters, so maybe it gets better later on, but the parts I read were very haphazardly put together. Accounts from real life survival stories are intermixed with the author s philosophy on survival physiology. In addition, the author often makes...
#Survival skills for the wilderness and life. (2004-04-25) Deep Survival ReviewLast year my family visited the west (Sedona, Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, Lake Powel). Upon arrival at Bryce I walked from the lodge to the canyon. Despite warning signs and the fact that I had all the information I needed right before my eyes if it had not been for a lady sitting on a bench at the edge of the canyon I warning me I would have walked right off the edge of the canyon and fallen surely to my death. I was about thee inches from the edge when she spoke to me and I perceived that I was about...
