#A rallying cry for the small-scale farmer and the consumer (2008-05-25) This book could be broken down into three parts. The first few chapters document the shocking state of our current agricultural industry and in particular the ecological costs of our massive overproduction of corn and the consequences it is having on the beef we eat. The middle portion is a first hand description of one farm in particular that has bucked the trend and still remained viable. This is then expanded into a more comprehensive look at the organic food industry and how it is evolving. Finally the auth...
#A Wake Up Call (2008-04-16) Like An Inconvenient Truth, The Omnivore s Dilemma is a wake up call to the realities of the present day and a warning that our current lifestyles are unsustainable. The Omnivore s Dilemma brought to mind another book--the classic, The Grapes of Wrath (Centennial Edition)by John Steinbeck. Published in 1939, The Grapes of Wrath took place during The Great Depression. I recently re-read the book and was struck by how connected to the earth most Americans used to be. In the past two hundred years, America has gone from a mostly rural population to a country ...
#Modern North American discovers the reality behind his food (2007-09-24) This is the most basic culinary detective book. In modern America, Michael Pollan wonders what to eat: . . . imagine for a moment if we once again knew, strictly as a matter of course, these few unremarkable things: What it is we re eating. Where it came from. How it found it s way to our table. And what, in a true accounting, it really cost. Of course most North Americans can t answer these questions in any self-satisfying way, so Pollan sets off on the case. He journeys through the belly of the food indus...
#Great food and insight (2007-09-24) This book is fantastic for understanding where our food comes from, the history of it, and what options we have. It make me much more aware and curious about all these things.
#Much Depends on Dinner (2007-08-15) I haven t seen the book, Much Depends on Dinner by Margaret Visser, popping up in any of the you might like this book sections. She takes a meal and goes back through all this history, changes, developments, etc of each dish: chicken, corn, rice, salad, lemon juice, olive oil, and ice cream. Fascinating read. Her first chapter is all about Corn. I couldn t put it down.

#Good Follow up to Omnivore s Dilemma (2008-08-14) From bestselling author Michael Pollan comes In Defense of Food, the highly anticipated followup to his previous masterpiece, Omnivore s Dilemma. Unlike Omnivore s Dilemma which was more of an exploration of the food that is on the typical North American dinner table. In Defense of Food is more of a prescription for healthy eating, and a natural follow-up to Pollan s excellent investigative work in Omnivore s Dillemma. Essentially, Pollan s argument is that we should eat less and eat mostly fresh vegetables bought at the farmer s mar...
#Back to Nature (2008-05-28) It is so good to read a book about nutrition that does not promote any new diet! The author s message is plain and simple: Go back to nature, eat wholesome foods, and don t bother with dieting. Don t overeat, instead eat slowly, and enjoy your meals - such notion has already been promoted by Mireille Guiliano in her bestseller French Women Don t Get Fat. Our curse is processed food. The dieting industry completely distorted our feeding process. Our desire to improve everything and to separate needed ingredients from the unneeded ones leads us to refi...
#Food You Will Love (2008-04-16) I just read a number of reviews and want to write something a little different than what has been expressed. If this diet is new to you and you are afraid you won t like it, relax. A major change in diet takes time getting used to,but the foods Michael Pollan recommends we eat are delicious. At one time, I ate processed food, much of it with a high fat content, too much salt and so on. For years now, I have eaten what Pollan suggests. I love the food I eat and now find fatty, processed foods to be inedible. My tastes have changed. This winter I have ...
#it makes so much sense (2008-03-23) This book is the last book on nutrition you ll need. It covers evertything from the beginning. . . when food was changed with modern industry and why so you get an idea about the history of nutritional adivse and diets. It really makes sense and like someone else also mentioned it doesn t try to sell you a new approach or diet but rather makes you think what you do to your body if you stick to your current diet. If you read the content of a package of whole wheat beagles like I did recently you are not certain anymore that you do your body someth...
#Simply An Excellent And Fascinating Book. (2008-03-18) It is nice to read a book by an author who is not trying to push the latest theory about this or that diet or the celeb nutrient of the day. But I do not wish to suggest he is not highly critical of the so-called Western Diet. Much like another excellent book: An Apple A Day:. . . by Joe Schwartz, this book is written by someone who has first rate critical thinking skills, and what appears to be the complete absence of any agenda. The author is very well read and comments along the way, and quite helpfully, about other books o...

#Finally, getting to the fat! (2008-11-08) I am always on the lookout for a book that can help me with belly fat as that is my biggest problem and I am so glad this book was written! It s not like it s that much new info--more grains, slow down when eating, etc--but it gave me a new perspective, which is what all dieters need from time to time. If you want rid of that belly fat, this is the book for you. Another one that helped me get on the weight loss kick was Fatass No More! How I Lost Weight and Still Ate Cheeseburgers and Fries.

#Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies (2008-10-03) In short, just a very fun and informative book with several worthy goals. For one, it educates your average person in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through frequent quizzes, trivia, facts, and interesting pictures- for instance the authors use a lot of elf cartoon. Corny, but fun. Additionally, the book also gives one many helpful tips on how to keep their body running smoother and it is a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many- especially middle-agers l...
#Excellent (2008-05-13) There is a reason Dr. Mehmet C. Oz and Michael F. Roizen write best-sellers--their books are excellent. You: The Owner s Manual, Updated and Expanded Edition: An Insider s Guide to the Body that Will Make You Healthier and Younger, they outdo themselves. This edition has been carefully updated and expanded to teach the reader everything we need to know to keep our bodies healthy and young. Specifically, the updated version includes a chapter on the liver, new recipes and a new workout. The book also includes a 100 FAQ s from their reader s inquiries. The bo...
