Now that he s gotten us talking about the viral life of ideas and the power of gut reactions, Malcolm Gladwell poses a more provocative question in Outliers: why do some people succeed, living remarkably productive and impactful lives, while so many more never reach their potential? Challenging our cherished belief of the self-made man, he makes the democratic assertion that superstars don t arise out of nowhere, propelled by genius and talent: they are invariably the beneficiaries of hidden advantages and extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies that allow them to learn and work hard and make sense of the world in ways others cannot. Examining the lives of outliers from Mozart to Bill Gates, he builds a convincing case for how successful people rise on a tide of advantages, some deserved, some not, some earned, some just plain lucky. Outliers can be enjoyed for its bits of trivia, like why most pro hockey players were born in January, how many hours of practice it takes to ma...

#Some Great Insights (2008-11-26) I was a big fan of Galdwell`s first two books, the Tipping Point, and Blink. In Outliers, Gladwell tries to give insight into the story of successful people. A few of the insights such as demographics, luck, and the 10,000 hour rule, will not come as a surprise to most people. I think we are all aware that superstar athletes, and great musicians spend countless hours practicing. A little luck does not hurt either. However, there are some insights that are quite startling. The culture of honor in Kentucky, and the ethnic aspect of plane crashes, real...

#Replace Bullet Points with Dental Posters That Evoke Positive Feelings, Tell Stories, and Be Mentally Present (2008-10-21) Long before there was PowerPoint, most presentations contained more columns of numbers and bullet points than pictures. PowerPoint seemed designed to capture the essence of those transparencies and make it faster to create them . . . while adding color. Compared to those ugly transparencies, PowerPoint seemed like an improvement. By comparison, my dentist has always covered his walls with beautiful bleed images of gorgeous places combined with intriguing sayi...
#Presentation Zen - Review (2008-06-10) Presentation Zen is a MUST-READ book for any teacher, presenter, or preacher. I cannot convey the frustrations Ive had sitting through countless lectures, workshops, or sermons where the presentation slides have been slowly killing my mind and my soul. Thank God for Garr Reynolds, one of the best evangelists for presentation design and delivery. I love his heart for all things design, presentation, and art related. I devoured this book in a few hours (its quite simple& but not simplistic). Very practical steps on how to prepare, design, delive...

#So Accurate it is Eerie - Schiff Saw this Collapse Coming (2008-10-08) My only regret is not having read this book sooner - I ordered it some time ago and it sat on my to do pile. . . until this global economic crisis hit. Reading this book is liking reading a play-by-play of how the global credit crisis, real estate bubble, stock market plunge and ensuing recession (depression?) are all precipitated by the out-of-touch economic policies of the United States and Federal Reserve. Schiff also explains how national and consumer debt have hamstrung our economy, and debunks the fallacy t...
#Finally, a person who makes sense unlike Paulson and the Fed (2008-07-30) Warning, a quote from the book. (Page 87)Business CyclesAccording to the classical economists, like Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich A. von Hayek of the Austrian school, recessions should not be resisted but embraced. Not that recessions are any fun, but they are necessary to correct conditions caused by the real problem, which is the artificial boom that precede them. Such booms, created by greed, others by inflation, send false signals to the capital markets that there are additional savings in the economy to...
#An awakening (2008-06-30) Crash Proof is a must read book. Peter presents the real reasons for the current inflation we are experiencing. He does this in a manner that is clear, simple and easy to read. I call the book an awakening because everything I have ever learned was from a Keynesian perspective and it was like walking through the world with my eyes closed. Cause and effect never really jived. After reading Peter s book everything makes sense. I now know how to protect myself and my family. Thank you Peter. Happy reading everyone.
#A very timely book - don t procrastinate (2008-02-01) Peter Schiff tells it like it is, was (some predicted developments have recently happened), and as it will be. Through logical, persuasive arguments clearly presented Mr. Schiff conveys the understanding required to position oneself for what he calls the endgame. Written for the American reader, much is applicable to Canadians who want to cover their assets, even those who are not directly invested in U. S. markets or real estate. I d strongly recommend buying the book and reading it first. Then walk through some of the extens...
#Cut through the Wall Street Propanganda (2008-01-30) Peter Schiff is the exact opposite of the majority of Wall Street anylists. He is not afraid to talk about some of the problems with the financial markets. The US dollar, The Federal Reserve, gold prices, official government inflation numbers, trade problems, you name it, he gives you the real take. This book was written in 2007, but is much more timely in 2008. The current US dollar slide and Sub-prime market problems, make this book a must read.

#The most important events in life cannot be predicted. (2008-05-23) Taleb s primary thesis is that our lives are governed by black swans, the highly improbable, the circumstances that cannot be foreseen. A turkey will live its life in eager anticipation of the farmer who feeds it. In no way can it anticipate the day the farmer will decide to serve it for Thanksgiving dinner. Most of the world did not expect 9/11 or the impact it would have on their lives. J. R. Rowling could not have predicted the phenomenal success of her Harry Potter series. Mr. Taleb differentiates betwe...
#Improve your odds (2008-04-13) As an investor you are always looking to have an edge. This book opens your mine to mistakes in the stockmarket in value investing and risk vs reward of smaller stocks that proprotionately favour the Black Swan effect. Provocative yet should be profitable to ones portfolio!!
#Living Betwix and Between (2008-02-24) Most of us are content to live within the parameters of what we think we know about our environment. Our safety zone is found between what we know for certain and what we can never be quite sure of. Into this midst Taleb drops a bombshell in the form of the Black Swan, a coined term describing the element of the highly unlikely or improbable. It is this less than two-percent chance of the unexpected that requires the individual to be skillful anticipating possible success or failure. As humans we live between either too narrow an existence wh...
#Disappointing (2008-02-04) This book is about 300 pages too long. Read the first 5 pages, and skip the rest. The author has a very high opinion of himself.
#Terrible book by crackpot author. (2008-01-29) This was a terrible book and I really struggled to finish it. The most disappointing thing was that it looked so promising and I was really excited to read it, I was let down. I ve read a lot of financial books and this one tops the list for least amount of useful information and fails to divulge a single investing strategy. N. N. T essentially rambles on for 305 pages about how you can t predict the unpredictable (which is true by sheer definition, yet Nassim manages to ramble on for 17 or so more chapters), and that he hates stat...
